Since watching the movie 'Hostel', I've since been interested in learning more about the country. I also beleive that my car was made in Slovakia.

Has anyone here visited this country before? I've looked at Wiki and it doesn't really paint a pretty picture of it. I also did a wee search on the Google and found this: http://www.visit.sk/ But to be honest, the site looks a bit dodgy :p Would I be better off visiting one of the neighbouring countries instead?

Please note:
If anyone posts smart (idiotic) comments about hot women in hostel dorms, I swear to Jaysus, I shall hunt you down and cut you up reall, reall good. *sucking of flesh sounds*

Well, you must have a reason or desire to visit a country unless it's for work or something, so I don't really see the problem.

It's simple; do you want to visit Slovakia?

Phil.

I'm not sure :( I've never been to Central Europe. I would like to visit though. Nobody ever seems to go to Slovakia so i thought I might get myself booked into a nice hostel and drink some Vodka or something.

Better start now, I can imagine a boost in tourism due to the film.

Did you know the Director of Hostel wrote a letter to the Icleandic president, apologising for making Icelanders look like sex-crazed freaks? FACT. :D :p*

Seriously though, I've heard central Europe is great. I say give it a go. :)

* I know Iceland isn't in central Europe.

Me & Leon went to the capital of Slovakia (Bratislava) in March. Had a fantastic time. Beer was cheap (38p per pint), food was lovely and the city itself is beautiful. It's just like visiting any other capital city in the world. The outskirts are a bit shabby, but it's to be expected from any capital.

I must also point out that the film Hostel wasn't actually filmed in Slovakia. It was mostly filmed in Prague. The film paints a very bad and inaccurate picture of Slovakia. I saw more maniacs on the streets of Manchester than in Bratislava. Slovakia is a lovely country, and we'd definitely go back.

We also went to Warsaw and Krakow (Poland) on the same trip, which I'd highly recommend to anyone thinking of visiting, despite it being an OMG ex-communist country.

Don't believe everything you see in the movies ;)

My Polish friend in college keeps saying I should visit her country. I might take a trip with her next time she's over. :D

ive been to Bratislava as well. its mostly a nice city with nice cheap beer. the old town is nice. you can go on the boat to vienna in austria for a day trip if you fancy it. theres quite a few things to do. youll like it. i flew into prague. stayed there a few days and got the train to brno for a few days then to bratislava. really cheap too.

If you think Hostel is even close to an accurate representation of Slovakia you are in for a big shock!

I've always been put off travelling to capital cities, since they all seem so... I dunno, generic, but that looks really nice. Might consider it for my trip next summer :)
