Hello,

I've been thinking about where I would like to live and as I'm learning Italian I thought Italy would be a nice place to move and I could stop with family if I needed to.

I'm hopefully going to Uni in September but this is more of a back - up plan if I couldn't get into Uni.

It would probably be early next year some time that I would move as I would need to get some money together and then find where I'm going to live etc etc.

Just wondering if anyone has moved to another country and what you have to do?

I've been looking at Pescara which is on the Adriatic Coast. But need to start pricing things together and also looking at different option on where I could go (Within Italy)

Thanks

I'd sort out something to do there first, whether that be a job or study. Don't just go there willy nilly if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I was thinking of the options of being a photographer there, as I currently do a bit of photography. Doing weddings or sending my portfolio to a few of the photographers already there

I often wondered about this. If you travel to another EU country, are you entitled to immediately start claiming that country's benefits, e.g. unemployment benefit / housing benefit if you just go there or is there an initial residency period?

no, it's just blighty :)
English mate if mine is married to a polish girl, and living over there he's not entitled to diddly-squat.

If I was to move as I've said previously I would earn some money beforehand so I could rent somewhere to live and also I could possibly stay with family until I get sorted.

I wouldn't want to be claiming their benefits as I don't need to

Sounds like a pie in the sky idea. Most people over here have enough trouble making a living out of a photography since the dawn of the digital camera and everyone thinking they can order an EOS and become David Bailey - there are hundreds if not thousands of photography 'businesses' that make such little money the photographers, some quite talented, end up working full time as well.

So to try and do the same thing in a foreign country just seems like a huge risk - if you can get a regular job then great, make a go of it, but other than that?

If I was going to move to Italy and live, there's no way in hell I'd even attempt it without actually having a job offer there first.

No offence mate but your head is WAYYY up in the clouds !, haha if we could all be photographers in Italy half this forum would have done it years ago if we could ;)

And no you couldnt claim benefits because a) Italy aint the UK b) Your not Italian.

Its a nice dream but almost impossible unless you get lucky or your obsessed with doing it.

Italy doesn't have benefits for you to claim anyway.

OP my best advice to you is to go and spend some time there, just be warned, don't go there thinking " Oh i speak a little Italian", make sure you DO. Italians get offended very easily and don't count on them to speak English to you.

Although honestly, this seems really random, why do you want to go to Italy so bad? It's not exactly the most stable or immigrant friendly country in the world.

Did you ever go on holiday there? I remember you made a MBP or holiday to Italy thread.

No, I haven't been yet but still planning to go as I'm still saving up :)

As I've already said I don't want to claim benefits anyway, and I would be able to stop with family for the time being as it would help me get me on my feet. It was just an idea that I was thinking of but haven't started researching into it yet (jobs wise), I'm also Quarter Italian :p

As posted above I'm not wanting to claim benefits.

That's the point of going to another country to speak their language and not them to speak English as it's not England :D

I've always wanted to go to Italy and I'm wanting to take a holiday there to have a look around and it's a nice country also having family there helps. And I don't want to do what most people do and move to France

Failing A levels?
Tut tut, just go to university and get a qualification. It may not make you complete job material but it's better than turning up in Italy with a Camera and limited skills.

The benefits thing wasn't aimed at you unless you're a ignorant moron which you don't sound like :)

Yeah having family there will really help you, just make sure you really speak Italian, I can't stress that enough, they are worse then the French and I don't say that as a bad thing, just a little advice, a lot of English people are spoiled by some countries who will cater to them because they are poor and need their business, unfortunately Italy is not one of them.

I gotta say thou, photography in Italy is really overdone, make sure you have a sound way to sell your photographs or a back up plan if it goes wrong, it's a beautiful country, beautiful food, beautiful people, assuming you integrate well in their culture, you can't really go wrong.

I don't do A-Levels, I do a National Diploma and no I'm not failing.

This is only a back-up plan if I can't get into Uni

Oh aha :p

Yeah, I would probably be able to stay with them for a couple of weeks or so until I found a job / somewhere to live.

It's not the main thing I could do as I'm coming to the end of my Media course but it's something I enjoy doing so I thought it could help me :)

Edit: @Chaos, Yeah I've got an offer and everything is sorted it's I need to get D-D-M (Distinction - Distinction - Merit) and my teacher isn't the best at helping me and I think I'm around M - M - M at the moment

Edit2: I've got an extra 60 UCAS points though which will help hopefully

Doesn't need to be just a backup plan. How about just going there for 3 months before university?

Why don't you see if you can get into university in Italy.

I moved to Prague to go to university, it was probably the best experience of my life. I made a lot of friends from all over the world, I had relations with a few czech girls I could have never got in the uk:D, I met my wife (best part), I setup my own business, I made a bit of little money, I had a few nice cars, I travelled thought central europe, I went skiing on weekends and I managed to get my self a Medical degree at the end of it.

But sadly all good things come to an end and I now spend much of my time in the uk.

Never thought about that, But I've got a couple of problems which are I'm going on my last holiday with my parents at the end of July and I have work experience at the end of August

@Dr House, That sounds amazing, How did you get in touch with the University? A good thing about the Uni I'm going to is that in the second year it offers you the choice of studying abroad and Italy is one of the places :D
