I'm currently a split windows (older games - red alert 2, wow etc) and linux user (everything else) looking to make the switch.

This has only come about with the mac's new intel chips that enable the use of windows xp and games when I should need it :)

Now, the price of a nice macbook pro (like my boss has) is also in the same kind of ballpark to a decent windows based laptop.

I'm a bit of a unix nerd and love OSX.

Anyone like me made the switch? how have you found it so far?

I've been a Windows user for a LONG time (10yrs+) and made the switch to the MacBook when it was released. I don't regret it at all :) To me, OS X is far superior to Windows in the way it does things, and it works as i want a computer to work - the whole experience is so much less stressful!

Have you got any particular questions you'd like answered?

I spend about 40% of my time in Windows, 40% in OS X, and 20% in Linux. I absolutely love OS X. It took some getting-used-to but once I grasped the logic behind the way things work I find that it makes loads of sense. It's solid, stable, smooth, and well-designed. It does what I want it to do.

What more would you like to know? :)

well, its basically the whole gaming thing - The games I play now are virtual pool hall (lol) quake 4, wow and steam based stuff.

My desktop PC is an AMD 3500+ GeForce 6800

There is DarWine that was trying to make Win32 binaries and DX system calls work on OS X but I think the way ahead is dual boot or virtualization.

I don't think Cedega sells any OS X products though I could be wrong.

EDIT: On second thought, I think that DarWine was for PPC. With Intel CPUs regular old Wine should work.

EDIT2: D'oh!

might try and compile cedega from source then on my boss's macbook pro

either that or try and get an OSX style window manager :p

I bought a mac mini with the intention of switching, but it hasn't happened. Although the interface is nice looking, I found that after using it on a daily basis it becomes extremely frustrating and I find that I can get things done much quicker in Windows.

What a waste of money :(

What on Earth do you find so frustrating?

Before you contemplate switching, you need to have a willingness to change. If you don't have this then when you encounter a small annoyance or problem then you'll give up and just go back to what you were using before. However, if you give it a proper go for a week or so then you'll be fully converted ;)

I switched 18 months ago after 10 +years of MS, I have to say I never looked back. Nothing would make me use windows and my useage is now 80% mac and 20% linux,

Ditto, the interface is far more intuitive, and the function keys are almost exactly the same, i switched about 10 months ago and I would never choose to go back to windows and I am getting my second mac in september when i go to uni.

sell it then?

Switched over to Mac on Saturday (MBP, 2Gb RAM).

Well, compared to my old laptop, this baby feels a lot more responsive.

Still in the process of setting things up at the moment (daytime is for work, and can't spend too long on the Mac in the evenings or the wifey gets annoyed :p )

Generally speaking, pretty impressed with it. Still trying to get used to Option-C, rather than Ctrl-C etc etc. Also, not used to not having a seperate Home, Page-Up, Page-Down key and Delete key (actually, suprised how much I miss not having Delete and only having Backspace).

Expose rocks though!!! iPhoto seems a pretty good tool, and the wife will find it pretty easy to use. I'm impressed by Adobe Lightroom (Beta), which runs on Mac only at the moment.
