Thinking of replacing the Yaris...

Dad phoned the guy this morning and had a pretty lengthy discussion with him. Basically he has another party interested who has a good part-ex and there's mroe money in it for him. Pushing for anything extra in the deal has pretty much hit a brick wall, but that's not a big problem as the car doesn't need as much as expected

He's confirmed that the cambelt and water pump were done at 80k miles by an indy so that doesn't need doing. It was last serviced 2k miles ago so he won't be doing that either. He won't put any new tyres on either. The only extra he's going to throw into the deal is 6 months tax.

I'm pretty happy with the deal on the table and have said yes pending approval of funds from the bank. I have an appointment down there in 30 mins!!

Usual traders lie that - and its worked a treat on you. A 'good mate of your Dads' and all youve managed to really get is some tax and 500 quid off the screen price of a near 10k car. Not only that, he's managed to get you to think he's doing you an amazing deal.

Used car salesmen, dont you just love them?

To be fair on the guy he's giving me £4300 for my Yaris which is £300 above book. so he's losing out on £300 straight away. Even my dad agrees that for the work he's doing I'm getting a good price. Remember my old man has been in the business for almost 40 years and knows what's a good deal and what's not.

He's retrimming the front seats (4m of Alcantara at £100/m), Repraying the front bumper and bonnet, and putting 6 months worth of tax on there.

Still sure it doesn't sound like a good deal?
 
It's going to a local coachworks who he's used before for this kind of work, so I have faith. The alcantara is well know for bobbling, and as it's a creamy colour it also looks quite dirty whereas the rear seats are much brighter.

I'm sure it'll look fine.
 
If that work was done at an indy fair enough but I would say this. Okay it's not an S3 but when I got my old golf gti a while back I had a folder full of receipts from the original owners + I kept all mine so when it went on you have a nice history (not just a service book of stamps).

Even when I px'd my focus I left all the receipts for servicing n stuff. Heck I even kept the receipts when I swapped my tyres.

I would have expected loads of paperwork for an S3 - without it (and you said 1 owner?) I would say without a good excuse (maybe company owned car or something) perhaps they didn't care too much for it?

Still if your happy with the deal it doesn't matter and so long as it's a good runner fair enough. Just be aware that if it's sold as say FSH and that little blip at 80k (and is mean't to be there) is missing people will pickup on it and want money off etc.
 
The cambelt was done at an Audi indy and I've spoken to the guy who runs the place who remembers the customer. I'm also getting confirmation in writing that the work was carried out from the indy in case of any problems.

I admit it is a bit odd to not have a wodge of receipts for a car like this but not everyone understands the value of keeping a fully documented history of their car. It's got a book full of service stamps though which have been done on time so although it's an inconvenience to not have all the paperwork, at least I can be confident that the important work has been carried out when required.
 
Depends on if it's the older 210BHP or the 225. This is a 225 so 0-60 is 6.4secs and top speed 151mph.

Dad just phoned to let me know that the private plate is staying on the car as well! I won't be keeping it as it makes the car look like an early W plate but he reckons it should be worth around £400.
 
Oh forgot to say..bank loan was approved so all going well I'll be picking it up on Monday, which just happens to be my birthday..happy birthday to me! :)

The other guy that was after the car phoned the dealer up an hour ago saying he'd sorted his finances out and he'd take the car. Sorry mate..you were too slow!
 
Congratulations mate on the car purchase. Expect some pictures when you get it. Any plans or mods for the car? prehaps changing the alloys? :D
 
I'm happy with it the way it is at the moment. The chrome wing mirrors look nice on the black ones but I can guarantee that they'd get snapped off by students or chav scum in my area so I won't bother with them.

The only other considerations are 18" RSTT alloys which really improve the looks of the car, but also bump up both insurance and tyre costs, and then theres chipping which will take the power to ~265BHP, but I'm not sure is a good idea on a car with 106k miles on the clock.
 
Had a call from the garage this afternoon. We'd originally said to him if the car had anything less that 9 months MOT on it then we'd want it to come with a full 12. Turns out it had 7 months so he's put it through an MOT for us.

All's fine apart from tyres. Both the rears, which we knew were getting very low anyway, were borderline on a fail so what the guy has done is offer to give me £135 (the cost of 2 budget tyres) towards a full set of 4. That means I'm getting 4x Bridgestone Potenza RE040 for the sum of £264, which retail on Blackcircles.com for £440 fitted.

Didn't really want to be coughing up more money before even having the car but at that price you can't really complain. It'll give me piece of mind for 18months. Oh and he's getting the tracking done while the car is in the workshop..bonus!

That's what was on the car previously and what Audi fit as standard. I didn't have a chance to pick and chose which tyre I wanted as I was at work and it was a case of take it or leave it.

These will do fine for the next 18 months and then I can shop around for something.
 
I'd never stick with the OEM tyres, they use all sorts of dubious stuff. Was the perfect opportunity to get some decent rubber on there. Oh well.
 
Yeah I agree it was a perfect opportunity for some proper rubber, and normally I would spend ages researching the best tyres for a certain car. Unfortunately the car was sat at the MOT station at 4PM and they needed an answer from me straight away to get the tyres fitted, the retest done and the car back ready for the trip to the coachworks tomorrow to get the alcantara done.

Despite the apparent lack of grip from these tyres in the wet I still can't complain at the price.

*edit* tyres are 225-45-17 W
