Thinking of trading in my as-new Focus ST for a Golf GTi... opinions?

how about a tdi 170. 170bhp std or 200 ish chipped and 50mpg on the motorway. I've changed from a 2.8 petrol to a diesel mk4 anni 150 and its great, I don't really miss the vr6 as most of my driving is motorways.

The golf is definately more economical, the 5 cyl turbo was never going to be focussed (pardon the pun) towards economy.

As a private buyer the Golf would be a better buy (and i said this in your original thread iirc), its cheaper to run overall whilst not as 'good' as the ST (ST is better specced, more characterfull engine and far better steering feel), its certainly the classier motor.

I must say im impressed with my ST tho, i have done 41k in it since July 06, and its not skipped a beat, since it hit 15k i acheive 31-33mpg with alarming regularity (80-90% of mileage on the m way tho).Problem is, get frisky with the damn car and it really does drink some damn fuel, sit at 90 on the m way and you get 27mpg, sit at 90-110 and it drops to 24-25, around town its closer to 22mpg.

But its a hothatch, course its gonna drink fuel.

Oh and Bluefin is most definately Ford approved, the DS setup isnt tho.

I get approx 30MPG in my DSG GTI.

That is with a good mixture of commute, motorway etc. It's a company car as well so it is 'well' driven most of the time, so I think you are about right with your calculations.

It is not without fault though.

There is no doubt the interior materials are not of the same standard of a 99 Passat I had. Dash rattles from a bloody stupid air diffuser slap in the middle of the dash are common. I had to use blue tack to stop mine which is frankly ridiculous.

It does roll more than I expected, although as mentioned upgrades seem to sort this for the main part.

The stock sound system is quite frankly *****.

It is a hoot to drive though, I LOVE the DSG & it has a fair turn of speed when required.

For a company car it is fine for me. Would I spend 23k of my own cash though on a new one? Nope afraid not.

Would I spend 18k on a used one? Nope again I'm afraid.

What would you say is a good buy then? i always thought for the private user the Golf would be the better bet (my ST is a co car too)

Tbh, if I was looking at spending 18k of my own cash I would be looking away from the current 'hot hatches'. Although the Golf in terms of residuals is a reasonably safe bet out of the lot.

Off the top of my head I would probably be looking at a 350Z or similar.
