Thinking of trying a Mac

Just Sold my hi end Gaming PC,bought an IMac and love the different way of working and the gorgeous display for pics vids etc.

Not particularly bothered about gaming to any extent but got Civ 5 for the odd play.

Don't miss my PC at all.

Noticed the Apple Refurb store has a Feb 2011 MBP 13" for £779. Although, given the student discount price on a brand new late 2011 model, I don't think its really worth it?

Does anyone know if you can get the student discount instore? Also, am I right in thinking that you can't get the discount on the Applecare instore (only true if the first question is true I guess!)?

£779 isn't too bad though the hdd is only £320 gig and its 2 or 2.2ghz sandybridge. £80 saving isn't bad but you'll have to pay more for the extended apple care.

New pro comes with 3 years apple care to the 1 from referb store (think its one).

HE discount works fine in store though! Just turn up with a student id card and they are all fine with it :)

Just done a bit of reading and it seems that if you order on the education store online, you get 3 years warranty free. Applecare just adds extended telephone support. However, buying instore doesn't give this 3 year extended warranty :(.

Just order it online (or even over the phone)! All they ask is for you to email proof of your HE discount eligibility within 14 days.

I was a avid Windows fan as well. till i felt the quaility of a unibody macbook pro the quaility of build is outstanding.

i got a macbook pro 2.8 15'' (6mb cache) 4gb DDr3 500gb hddnvidia 9800gt (9600gt save power mode) cost me £800 of a famous auction site buy now. mint condition, keep your eye out if you want to try a mac, dont get a new one if you can help it

first thing i did was remove that 500gb hdd and put in a 128gb ssd and wow boot times are fast, even in windows high battery life mode windows still instant open.

i highly recommend going this route

I have the best of both worlds, MacBook Pro and Windows Desktop. I also triple Boot Snow Leopard, Ubuntu and Windows 7 on the MacBook Pro.

Don't compromise have it all!!!

Interesting. I did not have to do that when I ordered online.

Me either. I had to do it when I ordered my Macbook Pro over the phone, but when I logged into the education store via the proxy my uni provides to order my iMac, it went through all fine, and the 3 years hardware warranty automatically applied (takes a few months to show on the warranty checker).

They also, strangely, gave me the uplift for free a few weeks later which you normally pay £59 for, which is the three years telephone support (on top of the free 3 year hardware warranty).

They also give you this option in store, as they have given me the option on various products I have used my uni discount on in store. I think they said it was 70 -79% off the regular price for Apple care on my thunderbolt display.

Three years ago I was like yourself, avid Windows fanboy.. hated the mere mention of the word Apple. Then, for some unknown reason to myself I suddenly decided to buy a Macbook and my god am I glad I did! I don't think I could ever go back to fully using Windows now!

Change the three years into weeks and this is my opinion as well.

I now also find myself wanting an iPhone and iPad! Is this how it all starts? :p

Ah I should have made it more clear. If you order over the phone there's no way for them to automatically prove you are a student. By ordering through the HE store online they assume you are due to the store only being available through registered IP addresses of educational institutes.

My Macbook must be broken! I don't have any kind of affiliation like that after a couple of months...:(
