I've got a budget of £200.

I really want to go Quad core, at the moment I'm running whats in my sig.

As it's skt 939 what would be the best way to go about it, I don't need a PSU, HDD, DVD or GFX card just a mobo, cpu and ram.

I was thinking of going AM2 and buy a cheap x2 cpu until I save enough for a Phenom.

What do you people think?

SJ.

IIRC your mobo is upgradable to AM2 via the AM2 upgrade daughter board that goes into the socket above the PCI-E slot (?)

But tbh a better option would be to save up for a Q6600 because the X2 on AM2 is exactly the same as the X2 on skt939 just with DDR2 support. Otherwise if the daughter board support Phenom (theoritically should) then it might be worth getting that combo but then I'd imaging a new Q6600+mobo+DDR2 can be had for just a little extra.

Is your 1950pro PCI-E version?

Yes it is, Phenom wont be supported in the daughter board as there ain't been a bios upgrade in over a year.

I can get a cheap X2 for now on AM2 and the Phenoms seem to be cheaper then the Intel versions, I'm just trying to save money.

Sell the 1950pro and buya better psu with it and get the spec below, not bad for just over your budget.

Yes the cheapest Phenom offering is £25 cheaper than Q6600 but the performance is equally worse, you get what you paid for really and IMO the extra £25 is well worth it especially when a decent P35 board can be had for around £60. But then I've never used a Phenom so can only comment base on reviews.

You can also get a E1200 Celeron dual core for very cheap until you can afford a Q6600.

Cheers but I'm not really looking to upgrade my GFX card as I hardly play any games.

I can get a 2.5ghz x2 for £50 here.

I really want to go Quad, but am willing to go Dual until I can afford a Quad cpu, I don't want to go backwards then what I got now.

welll a q6600 is £140 2gb of ram is £30 at the mo that just leaves mobo you can either stretch your budget a bit and get it all or get a mobo the 2gb of ram and somelike like a e2160 for £44.

it depends on what you want to spend on your mobo really.

ok looking again you can get

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£65.79)
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
(£143.34)
OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)
(£29.36)
Sub Total : £202.97
Shipping : £8.25
VAT : £36.96
Total : £248.18

maybe save up for another month to get the extra £50 you need. you could get a dual cpu like i said but then thats a wast eof money if you know its aonly temp till youget quad soon after
