Hello guys

Just getting conscious of the parts in my rig now getting to the point where if I don’t sell them they are not going to be worth very much

I currently have a 8500 which will clock to 3.8ghz without much hassle
A p5k premium wifi-ap which was a brilliant board apart from the raid issues with that chipset
and 4gb of crucial memory pc8500

Still playing most games fine really, although with mass effect 2 coming out soon I don’t know for how much longer

Looking at the i5 series just for cost reasons, I have noticed the Clarkdale cpus simply from the overclocking thread, but have also noticed they are dual core, where as there is a quad core in that series as well ?

Not sure about the motherboards either, would be nice to have a motherboard I could at least stick a top end i7 in as well if I wanted too at some point and generally haven’t had too many problems with Asus boards

What do you guys think I should get ?

Just priced up a

i5 650
6gb of Corsair 3 x 2gb
Asus Maximus formula 3

Would that be a good combination ?

Well i don't see a huge point in upgrading if you can already run most games fine, what gpu do you have?

You want the i5 750 not the 650 btw :)

with the Asus P7P55D Intel P55 Pro and 4gb of dual channel ddr3, maybe a set of corsair xms3 pc3-12800 or patriot sector 5 g series

are you just going to be using this for gaming?

I have a XFX HD4890 no problems there really

I can see the i5 750 is quad core, is this the only reason to get one of these over a i5 650? there seems to be good overclocks been acheived with the dual core clarkdales

well the 750's perform very well, overclock well and are generally a great chip and will give you that extra boost in multi-threaded apps and games, the 650 just seems quite overpriced in my opinion

Well yes they are are quad core - ie pure CPU. The i5 650 actually has a crappy graphics processor on-die - hence its price. However, if you are planning to get any form of discrete graphics card, then this integrated GPU becomes redundant and a waste of money.

As for overclocks, the clarkdales do seem to clock well. Which is understandable due to the nahalem architecture and only two physical cores. However, increasingly games and apps are making use of more cores - so going for a quad core would keep your system relevant for longer. Besides, the i5 750 is no slouch for overclocking, I have seen overclocks ranging from 3.8 - 4.2 Ghz.

that board will work yeah with no problems but the Asus P7P55D Pro will probs work just as well and is £50 cheaper

Looks ok that board actully, it will probbably do everything i need it to do and like you say its cheaper

What about the cpu cooler ? my case worries me because i bought one of them thermaltake 120u when they were the cpu cooler to have and it was far too big, i like the zalman coolers but it seems all the ones for this socket are out of stock!

What case have you got?

Personally, I think If you are doing an upgrade and it can't fit a cooler the size of the TRUE then you want to consider upgrading the case. Especially when it sounds like you want to do some proper overclocking.

If you're upgrading from an e8500, at least go with the i5 750. Upgrading a dual to a dual is a bit pointless.

Yea i know, its becoming a concern, i quite like my retro coolermaster case though, i cant remember the exact number, i am trying to find it now!

This one! whichever it is..

Apparently the arctic freezer rev 2 will fit fine in that case, so gonna have a go with that, definatly going to have to think about getting a new case i think though, as much as i dont want too.

I upgraded from an e8500 to an i5 750. Both clocked easily to 4.0GHz.
The i5 is miles faster, however the e8500 is still bang on for gaming.
I only upgraded because I was having problems with my socket 775 mobo. I have sold my 775 stuff now and don't regret the upgrade for a minute!
I am running Corsair XMS3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz RAM and its OK (not outstanding)
