Should work no problem.. what make TV is it? my friend got given a cheap tv and browsing the web on it i could see the text quality was extremely bad. But on a decent TV it should look perfectly ok. I use my 46" as extended desktop works a treat. What resolution is the TV?
If your talking eye strain because your current screen is too small then look at one of the 24inch LED backlit screens, the benq is good value for money and plenty big enough. Ultimately it says more about your missus's eyes than it does your screen.
The dot pitch (pixel size) of that monitor seems to be .28mm. A modern 1920x1200, 24in monitor like the Dell 2408WFP has a dot pitch of .27mm and most modern 16:9 24in monitors have similar pixel size. Therefore, if you get a larger monitor and keep the DPI settings the same then you will not see any benefit. However, if you increase the DPI within windows then everything will look larger (mainly text). This will reduce the amount that can be seen on the screen, but the increased resolution should help. This would mean that you could set it up so that it displays as much information on screen as the old 19in did - but everything will be much bigger and easier to see.
Another option is to get a very large monitor like this and also increase the DPI (though you may not need to do it to the same degree due to its size).
As for the TV option, you won't want a "HD Ready" TV as these only have a resolution of 1366 x 768- which would be a step down in resolution. Instead, look for "1080p" or "Full HD" (1920x1080) and a size of at least 24 inches. If you want to go really big, a 32in 1080p TV by LG or Samsung will cost you around £320-350.
