This confuses me?

How can the Geforce GT610 be worse than the Geforce 8800GTS? The newer card should be better. How can it be??

Newer doesn't mean better by any means, different cards are aimed at different segments and an older high-end card should beat a new low end card.

The prefix is the generation of the card. It's what comes after that's important. IE, 650 is better than 610, or in the case of the older series cards 8800 is better than 8600 etc.

So 610 is low end 680 is high end.

It's the same with the latest cards, 760 is midrange whereas 780 is top end.

When you see a 90 on the end these are dual GPU cards. IE GTX 590, GTX 690 etc.

An example from ATI/AMDs range as I happen to know the numbers better:

I recently went from:
5750 to
7850

Looks like the big difference there is 2000 more! 5k to 7k! But that means 2 gens later (a little bit faster) while the second digit indicates market segment, so I was going up one segment (big difference).

Had I gone from
5850 to
7750

It still on paper look like a big upgrade, but instead of roughly 2.5x the performance I'd be looking at roughly 0.6x the performance! Market segment is way more important than age.

5850 is faster than a 7750!

7750's are bleak unless you're running 1280x1024....

Isn't the 7750 that low-profile 2D card? Meant for app acceleration and not much more.

Never safe to just go by the model number.
