This is England

'Dead mans shoes' is great, I prefer his earlier one though, 'Room for Romeo Brass', an amazing film.

I watched 'This is England' last night, really enjoyed it. The performances were fantastic, the little lad and the scouser in particular. I thought it handle the subject really well, quite hard to watch at times with the parts containing racism and violance, but there was a lot of it about back then, the fact that he was allowed to make it shows how much faith they have in the guy. And more importantly he didnt glorify or condone it in any way. My mate saw it at the cinema and he said a few people walked out when things got a bit agro, tutting and moaning about the content as they walked out. my god, its like going to watch the last temptation of christ and then kicking off that its all about religion.

Really well filmed and the sound track was amazing also, I agree with the comment about 'you had to be arround at the time to get the most from it' I kept on getting told to shut up every 5 mins when something came on screen I used to have. The grifter, getting the cain, all brought back memories :D

sorry for digging up the thread but just finished watching it...well the 80's? i swear i met people like these in Sunderland 1996.

Got a bit emotional over the Dr martens boots , they were my favorites :p

Overall great movie , 4/5 imho

If you liked this then get Dead Mans Shoes el classico.

Dead Mans Shoes is miles better than This Is England in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, TIE was an interesting film, but I was born in 88, so maybe thats why I didn't quite 'get' it.

Sorry to revive the thread a second time :p

But I've just finished watching this, and my god, what a film! I thought it was absolutely amazing. Suberb acting by everyone, really great gritty realistic feel to it, and there was a real message behind it all too. The actor who played Woody plays a character in Emmerdale too, I didn't know they had such good actors in soaps :p

Even the parts with Smell weren't quite as cringworthy as they would usually be, thought it all felt really sincere.

10/10 for me, definetly one of my new favourite films, highly recommended.

I finally got around to watching this a week or two back with my girlfriend. What a superb film. Echoing what has been said, excellent script and story paired with really good acting. You've got a recipe for success there. But yeah, a really really great film, such power.

I thought it was an ok film. Nothing worth getting hyped up about - but I wouldn't have been disappointed had I paid £6.70 to see it at the cinema.
