Just making sure

Insurance on a 1.4i Rover 400, churchill.co.uk---

1600 a year with my dad as main driver.

Then for a 1.0 Micra, churchill.co.uk---

1100 a year again with my dad as the main driver.

Are these correct prices? Someone I know told me he got insured for £700 on his micra, but Im guessing now that is for 6months.

Im 17btw, passed my test in december and 18 in june.

When i was 17 rover 214 me as policy holder £1054 so yours seems a bit steep, could be your area? also fraud etc :p (someone had to say it)

Sounds a little high maybe?
The price diff with your friend could be due to a number of things:
Your postcode
Your main drivers ncb
Mileage
Your age
etc

1. If this is your car and not your dads then the policy should really be in your name.

2. Your policy depends on lots of things such as location, no claims, your dads record (points, accidents) but even on a named driver policy I wouldn't expect to get much cheaper than £1k.

Try some different companies, Elephant/Admiral are good for young drivers. Barclays are great for named drivers if they don't use the car much.

I forsee this thread going down a certain avenue.

Will the car be yours?

Its a well trodden path...

However, we aren't in possession of the full facts (yet) so there is no need to jump down his throat just yet!

Thanks for the reply.

Well I will be using the car but I heard it was cheaper to name my dad as the main driver?

But yes, the car will be bought for me but my whole family will use it.

Thanks.

Ok this is becoming boderline. Who will use the car the most? Yourself?

If the answer is yes, then it will be "cheaper" in your dad's name as it will technically be fraud.

Wow really? I didnt know that.

Well yes the car will be bought for me, and my family will use it every now and then for short trips.

I just did a quote on the micra, with me as the main driver........

In which case why have i heard of insurance advisers recommending it. As far as i know its not illegal, its just frowned upon.

They recommend it where its legitimate, likewise they recommend adding a parent as a NAMED driver if you will br driving the car the larger percentage of the time.

Insurance companies aren't stupid, if they can get out of paying for a claim, they will.

I found that my dad put money onto my quote but my mum took money off. Try Admiral they were great for me. Are you going to do Pass Plus, in my oppinion this is a good idea, even just for the extra experience not just the reduction in insurance.
You may find you will be better off in the long run if you are the main driver on your car, this allows you to build up your own no claims bonus. This is a big incentive to drive safely.
Keep trying, call up companies and get quotes because the online quote things are often far off the mark.

After passing my test I found Tesco to be the cheapest for me.
I listed my mum as a named driver on the policy which bought it down by 80 odd quid.
Adding my dad made no difference whatsoever.

It is weird that companies like Direct Line advertise towards young drivers with things like named driver no claims bonus. You'd have to phone them up and see what they say, if they say it's ok then make sure you get it in writing.

If you'd ask this last year I would have told you to just go as a named driver for a year, it's what I did a couple of years ago. But now it seems the insurance companies have had enough as all the kids are doing it.

To think that if I had crashed I could have lost £6k of car scares the **** out of me now, but at the time it seemed a good idea.

If I was you I'd try to get my own policy straight away, it's costs a fair whack but the no claims you'll build up helps no end. You'll soon be able to insure better more powerful cars for a reasonable sum.

Adding named drivers can make a real difference, I found that by adding my bro's gf it knocked about £300 off, then adding my dad made it another £100 cheaper.

Also if the car isn't worth much then don't bother with fully comp, the excess will make it pointless.
