Let me preface this by saying : oh reddit, never change :swoon:

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip....

It was bound to happen but I did not believe it would be this soon. Reddit is done with the system and are stepping away from their keyboards, grabbing their copy of The Game, the God Delusion and their Applejack sex pillows. They are embarking on a trip that will forever change the landscape of internet communities. I present:

The Reddit Island project has the ambitious goal of purchasing an island and developing it as a cross between a small self-sustaining community and a tourism spot. This is not an attempt to create an independent island operating outside the law, nor is it going to be a Pirate Bay Sealand spin-off. This is about the internet as a community, coming together through social media sites, and investing a small amount of time and energy across thousands of people to create something real and tangible

How can I help?

An organisation(sp) will be formed for owning the island. This legal entity will be required to pay the local taxes and fulfill the role as owner of the island. People will be able to by shares which will provide some level of benefits. This is only a guideline as the exact mechanism has yet to be decided upon so feel free to join the conversation and help us shape it how you'd like it.

Will there be /trees?

No, where ever we buy the island we will be subject to the laws of the host country. We are not attempting to establish a separate country or create problems for ourselves. In extremis we could lose the island or the board of the owning organisation could end up in prison.

I can see it now. Hundreds of geeky types living in mud huts enjoying a life of sun, surfing and sex. Well maybe not the later. :D
 
Nice idea, would love to build up an island from nothing, sounds like the ideal life.... Until you figure out how much of the modern world you take for granted, and you're stuck on a mosquito ridden hell hole without enough water or food.

Can’t see it working personally.
 
The project will only be successful if at least half the island residents of the island are like this:

Perhaps (WE'LL GO OFF-GRID BUT WAIT, HOW DO WE STREAM ANIME PORN?) but I think you might be thinking of several other failed attempts - also by people who can barely butter toast, far less better nature - and you're mis-attributing them to our favourite redditors.
