Have to agree with that, even though I am a 'pool fan.

Hyypia was stupid, Barry had hit the ball too hard and was going out for a goalkick, he should have stayed on his feet and let the ball go into touch and we would have had three points instead of one :(

that is one of the most ignorant and incorrect things i've ever heard anyone say on these forums, well done. :)

Then PLEASE excuse the ignorance of someone who has played and followed the sport for quite a sizeable amount of his entire life

And TBH, though I am proud to be offered this title, my ignorant attitude is nothing in comparison to your offensive and downright abusive demeanor.

.

well then its just a difference in tastes i guess, as i have played and followed both (and still do) for a considerable amount of time aswell :) and i find some of the things you said about rugby to be quite incorrect, or at least to what ive experienced (maybe you were playing league? thats a crap game :p)

Played league and union at varying levels of both. I preferred league cos I was lighter and quicker, and had loads more chance to use it either at full-back or on the wing playing league, I suppose thats one of the reasons I believe league to be a far superior game to union, but I don't believe either of them to be anywhere near the level of footy :)

Besides what people outside the games think, it is my opinion, based on my own experience, that rugby is far dirtier. One of the reasons I played it ;)

I dont think it is, rugby is surrounded by this myth that actually, its controlled violence and the players all act within a strict code of conduct and behave with honour, like mondern day Knights of the realm...............................

Thats pap, you run at each other, get as many sly punches in on someones ribs when their on the ground, jab your knees in to peoples faces in a scrum, pull his ears, spit, in fact use any foul and underhand means you can to wear down the other players stamina.
There is no subtle tactics, no wise old general sat in his office deciding what to do in the match the day after.
a load of guys stand in a line, and a load of other guys run at you, the side who is physically bigger- wins.

There is so much money, and so much of peoples lives dominated by football, that the players will and SHOULD do everything they can to ensure they win.
Just like................rugby players do, but at least there is no pretence surrounding football, Ruud dives, if he doesnt really have the ball under controll and hes not really got a clear shot, he'll go down under a challenge, same as a lot of other strikers.
Hypia yesterday took the man and not the ball, it was a late challenge, dispite the fact that the villa player looked to you not to have a clear opertunity to score is irrelevant, ive seen goals scored from tighter angles than that so it is an opertunity to score that has been denied villa.

Try to get as many sly punches in as possible? No
Jab your kness into people face in the scrum? No
Pull ears? No

The team who is bigger wins, dont be dull. The smaller teams are quicker and more agile and can easily go around the biger players. Thats why smaller players are harder to tackle and the bigger ones are easier becuase they just run straight at people.

One area where rugby (both codes) is better than football is the respect players show to referees. Rugby players behave like grown men and just get on with the game whereas footballers give referees & assistant refs a torrent of foul-mouthed abuse / blatant dissent on a regular basis, and usually get away with it.

its so sad the way everyone sterotypes rugby :/

Including rugby players? Like me, for instance.

And I believe there's a simple reason for that. The refs treat the players as equals, they don't at like mini-hitlers. Only one or two Prem refs have had the respect of the players.

YAY, finally i've found someone who likes league more than Union :D I much prefer league as it seems to flow much more than Union that is more run into players, have a big pile-on, run into some more players, have a big pile-on ;)

I used to play Rugby and football, and i found rugby to be the far dirtier of the two, i was punched, kicked, kneed etc, mainly by england rugby schoolboys, so not just nutters up for a fight :D But it is treated differently in Rugby, if someone gets a smack in the face usually they just get on with it, they don't roll around like they've been stabbed, they accept it as part of the game and get on with it, unlike footballers do, a hard challenge comes in they get caught, but instead of getting up they roll around for a bit and then get up unhurt.

Rugby players seem to be less petty than footballers in a sense.

Bull pap. I play Rugby at a reasonable level. Play for a top league district team. The only time the match ever degenerates is if the other team starts by playing dirty and in all the matches this has only happened twice, and they were both smaller, worse trained teams. Obviously if one of our team starts getting purposely singled out or their being obviously overly dirty we'll respond in like-kind.

People can never fully understand rugby until they play it...i had mates that before we joined upper school/6th form said "rugbys for meat heads" "rugbys for thickos"..until they started playing it..
but more and more schools are slowing down on rugby, infact theres a few round here that i know do it for half a term, dont have a school team, and then spend almost 2 terms playing footy with about 4 school teams...until people give rugby a fair chance it will always be stereotyped

My school stopped playing rugby when my year left 2 years ago. We made up the vast majority of the team and the teacher who took it left. Nobody else was interested in taking it up. Rugby is slowly diminishing through lack of interest. :(
