Well it's that time again.
Time to start thinking about a new PC and this year it's a little different and scarier.

As I am currently not based in the UK anymore (China) I need to be absolutely sure the components I've decided on will fit happily and work well together.
Soooooo......

And of course there'll be a case, optical drive, blah blah blah....
(And yes, I'm getting them from a local website, not shipping all the way from the UK :) )

So what do you think ?
Any glaring errors or things I could do better ?

Cheers

Only thing I can think to recommend is a Corsair PSU if you can get one or a Seasonic if you can find a cheaper modular model over there.

Are you going to join us in the SSD era? Now that will make a huge difference in general day usage, believe me!

RJC, is there any need for quad-cores currently for general PC shenanigans (movie watching, the occasional gaming session, internet stuff, maybe the odd encoding job here and there ?

I think that 2 faster cores would make more sense ?
Of course I could be horribly wrong :)

As RJC suggests, the i5 760 would be a much better CPU to go for, it is a true quad core (the i5 650 is a dual core with hyperthreading) and performs much better in games and applications (here is a comparison) but costs almost the same as the 650.

May I ask what you will be using the computer for?

Edit: For the uses you mention above the quad core will greatly benefit encoding, but for your other uses the 650 will be just as fast tbh. However, the two CPUs cost the same, and you won't be using the graphics core on the 650, so you may as well get the faster 760 for the same money. The 760 has more raw CPU power, so I reckon it will last longer before you need to upgrade.

As I mentioned, its just going to be basic usage.
* Watching stuff in HD
* Gaming now and then (like bi-yearly)
* Interwebz
* Occasional music/video conversaion and editing

As you can see, nothing too fancy. I just don't want to see the PC 'chug' at least for like 12-18 months :)

It would be horribly wrong to buy a dual-core and an unused IGP instead of a quad core for the same price :). You overclock the 760 so it isn't slower than the dual core - simples.

Ok, you've all twisted my arm.... i5 650 becomes an i5 760 :)

Not sure I can afford to shell out for an SSD yet though lejimster.
Maybe they'll come down a bit by the time I purchase in a month or so ?
WHO KNOWS !!! :D
