This shouldn't break my speakers?

Should it? I put the bass right up on my NAD 3020 amp and one then made a horrible noise whenever something was too loud or had too much bass. Did it again trying to find the problem, broke the other.. The speakers are Wharfedale XP2 speakers and I got them given to me. I'd say both the amp and speakers at least 30 years old..

My Dad hooked some old smaller and less powerful JVC ones. I'm not to go over half power on the amp or I'll probably blow them.

He is looking for some second hand speakers for me, what would you recommend? Just two speakers, I like bassy music though.

Like I said, I turned the bass right up. The speakers are at least thirty years old too..
