I've had it too, and I'm quite sure it wasn't malware, but a dodgy plugin. I don't even use IE other than for Logmein. There are countless reports of this floating around, but no definitive cause.
All I do know is that is that I was having Google searches crash IE (first time I've done it in ages, as I was just looking for the Google Analytics site quickly and wanted to log in with another account to my one in Firefox) and as soon as I hit search, it crashed.
In fixing that, it seems I've fixed the ghostly "this tab has been recovered" message (which appears consistently without a visible window, and before you know it you'll have 100+ iexplore.exe processes in Task Manager).
What I did to fix mine: open up IE, hit alt to bring up the menu, go to Tools > Manage add-ons > Toolbars and Extensions > and disable what you don't need. On mine, enabled was Contribute Toolbar (Adobe Contribute), FDM (Free Download Manager), a Microsoft Groove plugin, "Create Mobile Favorite" and a plugin for SMART (an educational software suite). I disabled all of them (no idea which one caused it). The Sun Java plugin is still enabled on mine, and obviously isn't causing the problem.
For the record, on my system (Win7 x64), going to Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs > Manage Addons didn't bring up the same list, regardless of what was selected in the bottom right-hand corner (for example 'Currently loaded add-ons').
