just installed smartfan and it says my cpu temperature is at 51c, that seems hot to me,

with an internal temp of 56c

is that too hot, obviously these shuttles will be hotter than most, but hmm?

Is the temp taken with the processor idle or at load and are you overclocked
at all.

Rob

Sorry to say but for an E6600 thats pretty bad. My QX6700 which is a quad core is usually about that on idle and the ventilation and ambient temperature in my work area is pretty bad too.

Did you apply a good branded thermal paste and did you apply it properly? What heat sink are you using and what other cooling do you have in your case?

it is in a little shuttle though, i take it that's the difference then ...

not tried overclocking, but at these temps i best not:(

I think thats to high 60c - 65c at full load would be max, can you try re-installing the HSF and use AS5 compund!
Also check the fans may be one has stopped working or is programmed for quiet.

Rob :)

fans seem to be working fine, bet their set to quiet mode... will restart and let you know:)

just before... in speed fan it has seperate readings for the cores of about 30 each... is that where i should have been looking rather than ... the cpu reading?

just went into bios, put it on low fan speed instead of ultra low and the temps went down to 45c idle ...

dont wanna keeep it like this though because it's too load of me ....

reckon i need to buy some silent fans? or do you think it's the way i installed the cpu? i.e put too much thermal paste on etc?

How did you put the AS5 on, should need a small line down the center of the
CPU heat spreader.

It might be worth in investing in some silent fans.

Rob

i put a thin layer all over it, that wrong?

hmmm, maybe i installed it wrong .. might try putting it in again...

what's the best way to clean paste off?

I remember my p4 3.2ghz use to idle at that in my shuttle.

shuttles don't have the best airflow solutions iirc.

Have an ask in the small form factor sub forum to see what temps people there are running with core 2's.

Sounds like you did it right to me. I normally apply a tiny blob in the centre of the chip then use a credit card to thin it out over the surface of the whole chip so there is a very thin coating. All the paste is for really is to maximise thermal transfer between the HSF and CPU and fill in any little imperfections in the surface of the CPU's heat spreader and base of the heatsink.

If you did want to clean it off, probably best to use Akasa Tim Clean although a little bit of alcohol should work too, spirit based like Vodka or something.

EDIT : Just read the pdf of how to apply AS5. I never knew you only had to apply a thin line down the centre?! I thought the whole surface required a very thin layer, thats what I've heard before anyway.

can you have a look over at my other post on cpu, cpu-z is giving my core clock speed at 1600mhz and 6x multi?

but above says e6600 @2.4ghz?

the low clock/multi is down to speedstep (or whatever intell call it) its apower saving measure, lowers cpu speed when its not doing anything,r aises when needed..

this is normal, dont worry :)
