This War of Mine

great game, although all the talk of food keeps making me hungry!

As a plus point, I've managed to cobble a meal out of leftovers from my fridge so I suppose its made me appreciate stuff a bit more!

..First few times I played it wasn't going well but doing much better now. Up to around day 11 with 3 Knives, Pistol, 2 Assault Rifles & 2 Shotguns. Also got Crowbar, Hatchet?, Saw....
Crikey, I must be really be playing it wrong. All my lots are starving all the time and all I can hope for is food!

Do you aggressively go scavenging, eg kill people?

I've learnt a few things. Often its not worth picking up materials when scavenging, but instead to grab things you can easily trade (smokes / tobacco, alcohol, meds, some things like sugar seems to trade fairly well) and then buy all of the materials from the trader who comes every 3 days. Getting an axe early on is handy since you can get a fair amount of wood and fuel just from your house.

With regards to scavenging, as soon as I had a knife i was going to "dangeous" places like some of the hotels and apartments and taking out the enemies there . In case you didn't know, if you attract enemies to your location (running nearby like a looney often works) and then hide in one of the dark wall places (no clue what they are called). When the enemy runs past, the attack icon goes orange and is a 1 hit kill. Often this will bring more guys running. Doing this helps you get weapons early on, meaning its easier to kill people, you get raided a lot less due to having weapons to defend with and they also are worth a lot when trading if you have extra.

On the first scavenge I usually take crowbar, sawblade, knife and some sort of gun + ammo and aim to clear out all the enemies and mostly clear out any obstructions so that when I go a second time, I have more inventory space.

Try to get 2 traps down as soon as possible, as you can exchange raw food / fertilizer for 2 food every day or so which helps you keep a stock of food.

You have to be careful with the aggressive approach, killing people and stealing from innocent people will break your survivors morale to the point of severe depression which can lead to a member leaving the shelter never to return or even suicide.

This game doesn't pull punches, you can be doing well then one savage raid can put you in big trouble.

Great, thanks for the tips. Think I may start again….again :D

Great game, never played anything quite like it! Have only played it for one or two playthroughs but is there a large variety of people/skill combinations? Or is it always a mix of the same 5-6 people with the same skills, like Fast Runner etc

Yeh I lost 2 people 1 after the other oops. Got a 3rd and now shes dead haha. Ah well, will go back and loot the corpse (which has that persons + anothers loot :()

Started again but using the first character as opposed to the 5th that I had been using and the game is waay easier this time around - I have much more food and my neighbours even gifted me 9 veg! I assume the starting character selection is the equivalent of selecting a difficulty level?

Sort of, the characters have different skills so it depends on your preferred play style. Some also start you in the middle of winter which is a bit rough. Starting with Boris is definitely easy though. 17 backpack space makes him the best scavenger.

Playthrough 2
Day 42
Boris the Shovel Killer has done it again. I don't know why he keeps doing it but it is keeping us stocked.
We're struggling for Parts, the trader never seems to have many and we've exhausted the most accessible places. Pavel never returned from the church, wonder what happened go him.......

Mine ended on day 42 as it went into night.
You can get a heads up via the radio but it doesn't tell you the exact day.

This is it! The biggest update so far, which has been in development for the last few months, is now available on Steam. We proudly present Update 1.3 that will give you plenty of new stories to tell. Let's take a look at what we’ve prepared.

- Scenario Editor in which you can write your own stories of civilians in war. Pick up members of the group, length of the conflict, weather conditions and more – it’s all up to you!
- Character Editor where you can shape civilians, their look, skills, biographies and then play with them in the game. You can even add your photo and be a part of the story.
- two new locations: Old Town and Looted Gas Station. Of course they can be included in your scenario!
- two new music tracks, designed for the night missions!

In TWoM you are the narrator. These new tools largely expand your possibilities of telling stories in the game.

Feel dirty bumping this, but I've had such a great time with this game, and noticed when watching the studios July update a reply from 11bitstudios stating they are infact working on 1.4 and plan to release it in weeks.

Just hope its more than windows 10 compatibility fixes (some having trouble with it) as it would be perfect if they fixed the -5c bug and morale related bugs.
