so that poor couple lose both of their young children to carbon monoxide poisoning and receive £350k compensation, while Thomas Cook, who have have been forced to apologise, so some of the blame is on them, have received £3.5m for loss of earnings!

I don't know about you, but something stinks here.

I haven't followed this, and based on your post have just seen this article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-32771355 - but based on it (and I may be completely wrong here), it sounds like the couple sued Thomas Cook (instead of the hotel potentially?) which meant that Thomas Cook had to pay to defend themselves. Seems that they primarily got costs for that back? Says -

"We had the right to reclaim costs related to the trial from the hotel."

There does seem to be some discrepancy between that statement and the inclusion of loss of earnings. Difficult to say why without seeing exactly what they had claimed for etc.

At the end of the day, I think that £350k compensation for the loss of two young children is an insult.

Its not an insult, it will be a calculated fee to cover the costs and maybe go a bit of a way to helping them carry on and try to get through it.

I mean if they got plowed down in the street or killed randomly by another accident would they get compo at all ?

Obviously money wont fix the loss, if they got 10 million would that make it better?

It is an insult when the courts award someone who has been the victim of racial discrimination and unfair dismissal nearly a million.

The whole compensation structure is buggered to high heaven.

What's your problem?

Three people, including the manager of the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel and two members of staff, were found guilty of manslaughter by negligence and sentenced to seven years in jail.

The trial cleared the firm (Thomas Cook) of any responsibility.

The only sickening part is that various rags want to wring out the emotional story for profit by contrasting it to the business story of Thomas Cook suing the hotel which caused it a financial loss.

This is not the full story.
You are missing a piece of the puzzle.
The court in Greece (yes Greece, renowned for legality, justice, and truth prevailing in all sections of their society) jailed 3 hotel staff, and cleared two Thomas Cook holiday reps. This was five years ago.
The Jury in the UK this week said Thomas Cook had been in breach of their duty of care to the family. The CEO of Thomas Cook refused to answer questions at the inquest, choosing his right to silence instead, and the company didn't issue an apology to the family for the deaths of their children, and they themselves being in comas and barely surviving, until after the coroner ruled against them.

Personally I will plan to avoid the use of Thomas Cook for the rest of my life now. I wouldn't know if the heating source in a hotel I stay in is effective, defective or dangerous. On a vacation that isn't what I am going to spend my time checking, I would assume the company who places me there would do this for me. Thomas Cook didn't and didn't apologise for it when it killed two children.
When a CEO fails to speak on the matter, refuses to discuss it, and doesn't apologise for it, then it do not reassure me in any fashion. They become untrustworthy in my estimation, and thus I shall avoid any dealings with them.

I would hate to be those parents. They are left with a life sentence, and all because they brought their children on holiday to Greece. The compensation, no matter what amount will be of little solace to them.

Loss of earnings has been valued higher than the lives of two children.

This is an utter PR disaster for Thomas Cook, probably explains thy they are re-branding. ;)

well unless the couple were planning on selling their children as slave labour they probably cant claim loss of earnings from their deaths.

To be honest, hearing this news wouldn't dissuade me from using Thomas Cook. Why? Because at the end of the day, regardless of who you pay money to, you're never 100% sure of safety. Sure, this was a tragic accident that could have been avoided, but that's the same as any other accident. As has been said, 350k seems a little low, but I'm not sure what would be an appropriate amount. Thomas cook, I'd say, was 100% right to claim compensation against the other company, however.
