My son is going on a school trip to Thorpe Park tomorrow.

I'm trying to get sorted in terms of what to send him with...

The website is not helpful - they mention:

The park being contactless - no cash - is that true? How can he buy drinks etc as he has no contactless card?

Food has to be "Sealed" - does that mean no sandwiches in cling film allowed in?

How much hassle is taking a small rucksack - I know you can't take them onto the rides, but is there somewhere he can leave a bag when he is on each ride?

Can he refill a water bottle?

Can he take his phone in a pocket onto the rides - I know the rule about no photographs etc.?

Quick responses would be great as I have to get it all sorted ASAP !

Cheers!

There's always bag racks for the rollercoasters, I just wouldn't leave anything valuable in them.

Phone will be fine in a pocket, just make sure its a tight or zipped pocket for any upside down rides.

There's normally always a water/drinking fountain in parks.

Can't offer much help about the cashless/contactless as I very rarely use cash these days, so no idea if things like vending machines would still take coins or if they're all cashless now.

Yes. The contactless thing is a real pain in the **** for younger teenagers who aren’t with their parents and without a bank card.

Do they have phones that support contactless payments, you could always link a card to it regardless of if its contactless? You should really get them access to some kind of contactless payment method in this day and age.

Plenty of places to top up a bottle in thorpe park, all the restaurants and bars will do it no problem.

pretty sure Merlin outsourced most of there food outlets and there not necessarily contactless. though according to their site you can refill water bottles at there outlets.
small rucksack should be fine to carry food etc, im guessing thats a school limitation that food has to be sealed, i cant see them arguing about a sandwich bag, but schools are gonna school!...
just for future, get a gohenry card :)

edit just to add, get the app, im pretty sure you can prebuy fast pass if you want to give him a treat :) though i suspect it should be pretty quiet midweek unless there are loads of schools with the same trip booked. the app is worth getting mind just for the ride times etc

Zipped pockets, sun cream, water bottle.

It's a theme park not a safari adventure he'll be fine :)

Anyone remember back in the day Thorpe Park used to have a little petting zoo/farm over the other side of the lake with a train that used to go back and forth?

I was there a 2 weeks ago though I ignored everything that wasn't rollercoaster.

Some rollercoasters had dedicated shelves or bins/boxes to put bags in on the platform. However, these are not really watched by employees. Saw (the ride) did have a dedicated area with staff taking bags in (on the platform) from memory that was the only rollercoaster that did this.

They do have small lockers that are around the park that you can use. I didn't check how much it costs or if you got your money back or how big the space was though.

They do have water refills around the park.

You are not supposed to take phones on rides but I did along with my wallet and keys. Make sure the pockets are deep and that the phone fits fully in the pocket. snug pockets are probably better than loose ones and note that you may find the restraints will rest on top of your phone if it is in your pockets.

If he wears glasses make sure they are a snug fit otherwise he may want to take them off. I never took mine off for any of the rollercoasters, and I only had issues on colossus because of how slow it is on the inversions.

Edit: Tell your son to get the App, the queue time listing is quite helpful.

maybe call the school rather than a computer forum

Computer forum is definitely the right place to ask for advice on free housing though AMIRITE?!

This thread is so cute by the way. He’ll be fine dude - zippy pockets and a bag, anything else he can get there but the cashless thing is a bit of a conundrum.

Tried the school, but it was strangely closed at 11:30pm. LOL.

It is weird, he's 15, taller than his mum but I still worry about him. I guess he will always be "the little one" being the youngest.

Thanks for all the help - appreciate it.

schools have different rules about this type of stuff maybe reach out to other parents see what they are doing.

I was picturing an eight year old with those little gloves hanging off strings, not a 6' beast. :D
