Now, I recently cleared out LOADS of clothes, filled 3 bags full with clothes as most simply didn't fit me and was decent stuff.

I was told on Friday night after telling my mate to do the same, who simply put's his old stuff in the bin.

Anyway, he told me that the company that sticks these bags through the letter box, sell the clothes and keep 50% of the profit?

What?

Yeah, it is better to sell them and donate the money to charity, or give them to one of the local well known charities with a shop....

I will be in future, I think that's disgusting they are taking 50% profit?

Normally do drop off unwanted stuff to charity shops but figured I would use these bags.

Sod them, won't be happening again.

They don't actually sell the clothes intact, they cut them up & bundle them so they can sell them onto car garages as oil wipers. There's a couple of places near me that do this & the local Council have cottoned onto this, they are now giving out bags so people can put their old clothes & think they are 'recycling' them.

Best to take them into a charity shop of your choice.

Grimley, that makes me sad, I had a really nice tshirt that I was hoping someone else could enjoy :(

I left a couple of bags of old clothes for one of these places when I moved out of a house a few years back. The morons never came and collected them even after I called, which resulted in the landlord getting annoyed with me for leaving 'bags of rubbish' outside the house after I'd moved. Had to go back there and transfer said bags from the driveway to the wheelie bin, or risk my deposit.

Won't bother next time.

If it's costing them money to put leaflets through your door you can bet your ass they're making money somewhere across the line. They use the 'charity' wording to drum up some sentiment, yet still make money on stuff they get for free.

Surprised that everyone hasn't caught on to this crap by now.

We must get 5 a week of these! They all go in the bin, we must have filled around 10 of them over the past year, we are down to a pair of the wifes knockers we have to share.

It is a great way though, to get lots of free bags you can use to line waste paper bins etc. we get so many through the letter box here that it keeps us in good supply :)

some of them aren't even real charities, they just keep all the profits.
They are either shredded or sold to other countries by the ton.

We've just done a complete overhaul of our house, they came in very handy.

As others have said, I'd rather take them directly to a shop if I wanted to be charitable.

We left a bag out last time one was posted to us and no one turned up to collect it. Had to drop it round a charity shop in town instead so will stick to that in future.

Gotta love those bags posted thru your door, we've not bought black bags/bin liners in ages :)

I'll only use the ones for recognised charities anything that comes through that I don't recognise gets used as a bin liner. If you read the small print on a lot of the ones that are for 'charities' you've never heard of you soon realise what a scam they are, I have no problem using a British Heart Foundation or Age Concern one as even if the middle man does take something out of the system the charity have clearly decided this is worthwhile.

Can also be quite funny to watch who comes to collect the bags as often the not so charitable companies will drive round and collect bags that were not necessarily intended for them, normally easy to spot them due to the shifty nature and bag kicking to check it's not full of brica brac they can't sell to the shredders.
