Just got off the phone with a friend - we were talking about those individuals who posess a phenomenal amount of talent but who never really got noticed.

So show us what you've got.

Jason Bowld
Drummer
Played with Pitchshifter for yeeeaaars and currently with This Is Menace (East Midlands rock supergroup, yo! ;))
Launched DrumROM back in the day and has always worked with younger drummers, teaching and guiding them.
Has the best "Drummers' grin/gurn" ever.
All-round general nice bloke.

Live with This Is Menace - metooooorrrrl.

Roland UK V-drum demo:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Little bit of teachy-teach.

"What's In It For Me?" live with Pitchshifter this year. Ignore the rest of the band; they're a shadow of their former selves. :(

"Genius" live with Pitchshifter in 2001. They jumped the shark shortly after this. :(

People have heard of them, but he's never been recognised by the man on the street as a particularly special guitarist or singer, and I think that's a shame.

For me, drummer-wise.

Brann Dailor (Mastodon)

Being part of a heavy rock/metal band, his ridiculously talented drumming skills are widely unknown to joe public.

As i've mentioned in another thread at one time or another, even Dave Grohl has expressed that he's the best drummer he knows.

Other drummers i think are good and pretty unknown are Frost (Satyricon/1349) and Martin Lopez, who's got an amazing style but sadly has left the band i discovered him in (Opeth).

They've all got pretty nifty double kick drum skills, but their timings in general are so tight and impeccable, its just insane.

:)

Martin Lopez and Brann Dailor are extremely well known in metal circles in all honesty. (Brann is one of my favourite drummers ever)

Yeah, but Metal is hardly proper mainstream carzy.

None of my mates have a clue who they are, none of my girlfriends mates and none of my university mates.

Also, quoting Rob Zombie:

"Metal is so ******* huge, yet most people dont even know it exists..."

I think that is true personally, but thats my opinion. :)

Here's a link to Brann Dailor showing off his skills, for those of you interested.

Pitchshifter are playing in London in December, btw...

Willie Dowling. Keyboard player in the Wildhearts, also keys and guitars in Honeycrack, now of Jackdaw 4. Arranged The Next Big Thing, wrote literally 8 million tv theme tunes, including pretty much all the music out of the Armstrong and Miller show and everything Tony Hawks (the unfunny british one)'s done in years...

Thats easy because the greatest unknown I've seen is our own dmpoole.
This might sound like sucking up but there are 1000's in the Stoke area who can't figure out why is voice never got him in a major rock band. I do know he was offered the Nazareth frontman job a couple of years ago.

Actually theres two old ex famous rock bands that offered me jobs.
I'm too old and I would hate to tour round the world for a normal wage.
It would be different if AC/DC asked though.

You have to be a dupe. Serios.

Stephen Malkmus - Pavement

Guitar genius who in this Pavement fans humble opinion, went a bit off the rails since going solo. But in his heyday wrote and played some seriously good tunes.

Also I'll add Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, the two above artists got fed up with the critical acclaim but low record sales, and sadly closed the doors on their bands.

Still as long as Robbie, Christina, Madonna and Justin continue to sell bucketloads of records all is good in the world of music.

I still refuse to accept that James Dean Bradfield is 'unknown'.

...Or that he has any more talent than say...James Blunt...(but that's beside the point).

Go up to anyone aged between 20 and 40 and ask them "Have you heard of a band called 'Manic Street Preachers'?" and almost all of them will say "Yes!"

Marco Minnemann
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygY2c1KNiTs
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ne6hZW3Wsr8 (With paul gilbert)

Marco has the most insane limb independence I've ever seen. It's like every single one of his limbs has it's own separate brain.

Benny Greb
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXTV_6-C84k (solo)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7_MWzqDeB8 (grooves)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zPBgfn7ToA (with music)

Recently coming onto the scene in the last year or so, Benny's feel is insane, not to mention his chops. I don't know what they put in the water in Germany, but whatever it is, it's doing a whole lot of good.

Vinnie Colaiuta
http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/vinniecolaiutabaked.html (solo)
http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/vinniecolaiutatweaked.html (Music - Off his solo album)
http://keithcronin.com/licks/vinnie_neon_moonlight.mp3 (Audio Clip ~14 seconds)
http://keithcronin.com/licks/kershaw_dont_ask_me.mp3 (Audio Clip ~20 seconds)

Vinnie is the best drummer in the world. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.

Bernard Purdie

http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/Bernard_Purdiegroove1.html (groove)
http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/Bernard_Purdieshuffle1.html (groove)

Bernard is a total groove machine. No-one plays that shuffle quite like him.

Akira Jimbo

http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/AkiraJimbosunshine.html
http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/AkiraJimbosint.html

Akira's kit contains a lot of electronic pad that he uses to trigger loops, or individual notes. He uses these to play out a tune, while at the same time drumming over it. Definitely interesting to watch.

All drummers, because I'm biased like that.
