Those "Great Unknowns"

Some nice links there. Love that one though, just such amazing feel. I expect he records beats for samplepacks and things?
Most of the work he's done so far is just session drumming for German pop acts, as far as I know.

Shawn Smith

Solo website.

A vocalist and brilliant piano player and not too shabby with a guitar.
He's been around for years, has been in many different bands:

Pigeonhed
Satchel
Brad
The Diamond Hand

He has 3 solo albums under his own name.
This song is from his last solo album "Shield of Thorns" and was used in the sopranos. He is not altoghether unknown but more people need to know about him.

Shawn and Stone Gossard made a side project called "Brad", they wanted to be called "Shame" but some guy called Brad held the name already and would not give it to them to use, so they called themselves "Brad".
My Space for Brad.

With Gossard in PJ they are not an active band, but their stuff kicks ass and is way better than PJ (imho).
----

The Satchel years were short and produced 2 albums and a handful of shows.
----

Shawn's latest project "The Diamond Hand" looks promising but as yet no material has been released.
----

He has never toured in europe.
----

There are tons of links on the solo website. for Satchel, Brad and the rest.

Check him out.

I still refuse to accept that James Dean Bradfield is 'unknown'.

...Or that he has any more talent than say...James Blunt...(but that's beside the point).

Go up to anyone aged between 20 and 40 and ask them "Have you heard of a band called 'Manic Street Preachers'?" and almost all of them will say "Yes!"

*n

Yes, but..

* A small section of them will know who JDB is

* An even smaller section of them will recognise him as a guitarist of note

He's unknown in that sense.

You have to be a dupe. Serios.

He is a dupe - he's a fan and he was at the gig tonight.
I'm too old and I can't be bothered.
I enjoy myself playing in a tuppeny pub covers band and thats it and I'm seriously considering giving it up in a couple of years.

Joe Satriani? Defo not known by yer man on ver street.

He's definately more well known than your average superdooper guitarist though.

Paul Gilbert is one who wouldn't really be known as well I think.

When I listenned to some of the earlier Manics records I have to admit that I thought to myself JDB is under-rated, I was glad to see him on the front cover of Guitarist, or Guitar World or one of those magazines about a year or so ago.

Yes I am a dupe. Serios.
The thread is about great unknowns and everybody mentioned up to yet have their foot quite a few steps up the ladder. I reckon if I walked around the factory and asked a hundred people who Brian Johnson was, probably one person might know who I'm on about but he's certainly not an unknown. I thought my choice fitted the bill perfectly.
