Anyone have any testimonials or real life experience with these multi sata adaptor cards that fit in an M.2 mobo slot? If so what Gen PCIe and how many lanes are you using and what is the speed like? Seem to be a nifty way of adding extra sata ports for more devices when boards these days seem to be scrimping on sata ports.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the 'passive' cards with no chip/converter require an M.2 slot that supports SATA mode (i.e. not compatible with most modern motherboards, since they have dropped SATA support)?

I'd have thought a PCI-E expansion card would be more widely compatible.

They work just like any a PCI-E to multiple SATA using a chip such as a JMB585

These chips are usually PCI-E 3.0 X2 so enough bandwidth for 3 SATA SSD.

Some of these M.2 ports are chipset so if using heavily they can impact other devices.
