thoughts of win8

Does it properly support Linux guests? I remember trying it with Server 2008 and R2, but OpenSuse was the only officially supported Linux guest OS (at the time, the drivers for other Linux guests were not that great!)

Haven't tried any Linux guests yet. I do play with Linux on rare occasion just to see what's new, but it's never been more than a minor curiosity. I'll have to grab a new ISO of one of the distro's somewhen. All the ones I have are probably 3 or 4 years old now.

The OS support in Hyper-V does seem fairly limited though. It won't, for instance, let you use any Windows 9x OS. Not that there's any good reason to apart from "I want to!" :)

Newer Linux kernels (and distros derived from them) have the Hyper-V, erm, "drivers" built-in. Well, not really drivers. Just source code that's been compiled right into the monolithic beast of a kernel that is Linux.

Annoyingly Hyper-V on Win8 needs SLAT support in your CPU. Which basically means you need a i5 / i7 CPU and rules out older Core2 chips.

The are two types of opinion on Windows 8:

1: I gave it a chance and love it, its faster than 7, Metro is much better than start and streamlines everything making the system easier and faster to navigate.

2: I either haven't used it, didn't use it long enough to give it a chance, or formed my opinion before using it. Waah! Waah! Waaaaaaaaaah!

This is exactly how I'm seeing it as well.

What is it with people whining and new releases of Windows?

  • It costs them money
  • It's 'not the same'
  • Old applications/hardware may not work immediately
  • OMG I r too l337 for this carp!

I wasn't overly keen when I first installed Win 8, and was quite ready to ignore it like I did Vista. After playing with it for two weeks now, I certainly don't have the same opinion, and will very likely be upgrading all four machines in the house. The only machine that will dip out will be the netbook, but that's Win 7 starter and isn't eligible for the cheap upgrade price, and I don't really use it anymore anyway ;)
