Thoughts on Excessive Speed

My band is now in jeopardy because the guy who drives most of the gear around in a trailer is already on 9 points and just got caught speeding again :(
This is 4 times on his meat delivering job he has been caught speeding but you would think on his first time he would have slowed down.
I do know people who have had 12 points and still kept their license for one more chance, what is the likelihood of that happening for 4 speeding tickets and if he gets a ban what ban could he get?
Depending how bad the latest offence was, how long ago the previous ones were, and how sorry he makes out etc., they may just give him 2pts and a fine to stop him tallying. Best outcome anyway, 11pts.

In all seriousness though I find in a lot of vehicles trying to stay strictly below 20MPH means you are spending more time worrying about your speed than safely looking around you, etc. at least the automatics I drive seem to have poor throttle articulation below 20.

Pish. It takes no effort at all to maintain a speed below 20mph in most cars/vans. 20 zones are mainly there for good reasons, and you're going slow enough to spot hazards and cameras in time.

I intend to make good use of speed limiter in my new car around schools I think. it's just too easy to go over the limit . whilst I admit I use the speed limit more as a guide than a limit , residential and school areas are a little different for me.

*some* 20 zones I do think are overly restrictive however. they put one in near my work. according to locals it was to stop chavs from bombing up and down the street.
I would argue a well enforced 30 would be just as good and rather than inconveniencing everyone they just stop the problem drivers.
in areas cut to 20 I would be interested to know how many injuries were caused in accidents by drivers actually sticking to the old limit.

I don't use the limiter or cruise control much and drive a few different vehicle so even though relatively brief that is another distraction from what is going on around me remembering the specifics of whatever vehicle I'm driving and setting it - not really practical for the 20 zones around here anyway.

I have no problems sticking to 30, 40, 50s, etc. without even [really] looking at the speedo but 20s I find very easy with anything I drive to creep above it - the pickup is especially a pain for it possibly because they've used the transmission/electronics from a 370Z for it tweaked to work in a pickup and while it mostly works it doesn't really seem to know what you are trying to do below 20 unless you are in low-range where you then have loads of throttle granularity (but you can't switch it to low-range while on the road like that and using it like that would risk transmission wind up anyway).

EDIT: Word I'm looking for is finesse really - at least the automatics I drive just don't really seem to have that level of finesse around 20 MPH to stick strictly to 20, I've not driven a manual in a 20 in far too long to compare. If for instance I'm trying to follow someone on a bicycle who is doing 10-20 it is a pain.

No problem sticking to 20 here although I don't mind them where they are needed most they do seem to be creeping into other areas which seem.perfectly safe as 30 zones particularly in Wales.

I've given up on "fast" cars. I plod along at 65-70 on the motorway now, even if I don't have the kids with me.

The only time I am a little more spirited is if I'm alone in the car and I'm on country roads that I know. Even then I barely go over the limit and just enjoy the more technical aspects of cornering and so on.

That said I drive a crappy slow SUV so to be fair that's helped keep my speed down.

I guess I've grown out of it. It's just not worth it for me. If someone is keen to overtake or drive like a nob I try and let them overtake me as quickly as they can so I can keep them away from me. I have nothing to prove.

Most of these 20 zones are mickey mouse though as not even legal its just the council slapping some signs on the road WITHOUT the highways authority traffic order to be considered legal so police cannot enforce them!

"“If a zone is introduced without a traffic order (a legal document issued by the relevant highways authority) then the speed limit applicable will be 30mph.”"

Obviously near schools, hospitals, pedestrians, residential homes etc etc most drivers slow right down anyway.

Wouldn't say I have "problems" exactly my posts probably over exaggerate it. I need to jump into something else to see how much is me and how much the vehicles I generally drive - the Qashqai for instance isn't very powerful but has an actually quite torquey diesel (320nm) mated with CVT *yuck* so it is a bit of *nothing* *nothing* *everything* when doing slower speeds. 1st and 2nd gear in the vans tend to be trashed.

Technically, dunno how much dodgy stuff goes on, if they aren't legal they can't have a red ring around the speed limit, if they do in theory they are enforced limits.

A black or no border around the speed, or yellow speed limit sign are advisory rather than enforced, but that doesn't mean there aren't legal implications - for instance if you ignored an advisory 20 sign at a school or roadworks and ran a child or workman down you may still potentially be prosecuted for speed.

EDIT: If a council is putting in red ringed signs without a traffic order, which wouldn't surprise me, they are themselves doing something illegal.

When I started cycling in 2010 it very quickly changed the way I drove my car witnessing the antics of car drivers around each other and around cyclists especially (always car drivers in my experience).
Since then when I'm on the motorway I play a game of never going in the fast lane.

Learning to ride a motorcycle years ago was an eye opener; it improved my driving exponentially. I became more observant, more aware of road conditions and other drivers. Anticipation became key and I became a more courteous road user. I also realised I’d been driving like a prat since I was 17.

I still own and want to drive fast cars, I just don’t drive fast anymore. I’ve grown up and I’ve too much at stake these days; wife/family/work etc. Plus I absolutely don’t want the guilt of ruining other people’s lives.

Coincidentally I watched a crash testing compilation from 5th gear the other night; it confirmed - if there was ever any doubt - how increased speed reduces your survival chances. Kinda makes me wonder how we are even allowed to dive legally at 60mph or beyond on public roads these days.

Motorcyclist just turned himself inside out on a road not far from me yesterday. He'd flown past me about 20 mins before he crashed. 54 years old. You'd think he would have learned by that age.

Born Again Biker syndrome?

Last had a bike 30 years ago. Purchased a new sports bike and found its performance far exceeded his skill.

Alas, it’s not uncommon.

100% this.
I wish car drivers would have to ride cycles to be able to pass their tests.
My Son in Law who drives a truck has to take cycle courses and said he's never been so scared.
@Scania have you done similar training because he's done it twice now?

No clue. I only know it was the same guy and what happened as I was talking to a neighbour this morning who is a paramedic and she'd been on scene. Well, probably the same guy as his bike and gear was distinctive and matched the chode who'd ridden past me.

I know exactly what you mean. My 428i is easily two seconds faster to 60 than anything I’ve ever had but I’ve never spent so much time doing the speed limit everywhere, I just feel having the available performance on tap for an overtake or being able to pull out into the second lane in an uphill dual carriageway or Motorway is very useful.
