Thoughts on getting my new car repaired

Definitely do the gearbox, as said, if it fails it’s bye bye car at this end of the market.

Put it another way, nobody in their right mind would run an engine for 100k miles without an oil and filter change yet many an “expert” thinks it’s fine for an automatic transmission…..

I’d also address the oil leaks as you’ll find the oil will start to attack rubber components under the bonnet potentially causing problems, I’ve just had this happen after a minor oil leak made a coolant hose fail on my Volvo (2006) V70, it’s not so much of an issue on newer cars but certainly is on older cars where age has already started to weaken the rubber, oil just speeds up the process….

If your thinking of keeping it long term then spending in it is a sensible investment, you’ll save money in the short term by not doing so, sure, long term your just going to spend a lot more replacing the car when it inevitably fails without the preventative maintenance.

I had both jobs done today. 3 gaskets in total, and a service on the automatic gearbox.

The garage said 2 of the rocker cover bolts were already sheared off. Probably someone has tried to tighten them in the past to stop the leak and has snapped them. Or maybe it has had a gasket or some other job done before and they reused the bolts (which they shouldn't do). The bolt heads had been placed back on top of the snapped bolts.

So all that is done now, and apart from the above, everything seems in good order according to the garage.

That's good, how many hours of man-power, the bolt issue wasn't an additional cost. .... can have some rwd fun now on the roads - on what tyres ?

(last month was concerned with a cat replacement on a i6 how many bolts might shear due to corrosion, and was going to plusgas them in advance)
