Thoughts on hypnotherapy?

YI wouldn't call them a susceptible person either. Addiction I could understand, but dealing with something like IBS did quite surprise me...

Hypnotherapy is a deep state of relaxation and yes, it does work.

^ This tbh. All it is, is relaxation therapy. No 'suggestions' or attempts to change your mind, it's more like meditation than anything else.

The idea is that a deep state of relaxation (and if you can let yourself relax, you can apparently really go into something that's almost like sleep!) suppresses brain pathways that activate when you're stressful (e.g. horrible feelings in your gut in IBS, anxiety in insomnia etc). The ultimate aim is to teach you to use the relaxation therapy on yourself.

The way I see it it may have certain effects if the person is open to it.
If you go in to it with the mind set of "this is rubbish, it'll never work" then that's exactly what'll happen, if you go in with a more open mind then I suppose you never know.

I went to see a hypnotherapist to treat fear of flying and acute hypochondria.

You obviously have to be open to the idea, and despite me being cynical and dismissive by nature, I would say it has certainly helped. It hasn't caused my fears to vanish, but just helped view them in a different light. Which has subsequently caused my levels of stress to subside.

It's just a case of altering your state of mind, of course it works but you have to let it. It's a way of embedding thoughts into your brain so when you see something that memory will be triggered which may help you decide to change your course of action thus rendering the therapy a success.
