Thoughts on new rigs

Since there still seems to be some ignorance of my more current posts, I'll make it clear in as large a text size as possible.

You need to check your attitude. You came here for help and advice and instead of listening you start most posts with 'Time to clarify' or 'Let me make myself clear' & 'Okay, it looks like I'm going to have to make things extremely clear'

People understand what your saying. people understand your goal. people just dont agree and are trying to help you. Im done here, it infuriating reading your huge nonsense posts and your rude replies and what sounds like complete disregard for everyone who has taken the time to help you out.

im glad you apologised for 'coming across like an ass' because "let me make this clear" you sound like an ass!

I recently chucked an old PC, mint condition, like new, barely any dust. Windows 98 item, all IDE and DDR, and could have stuck an old Barton 3200 chip in there with some Corsair LED equiped memory too for bling.

But there was no point. I had loads of old retro games, I mean loads, from the ZX Spectrum days too, and they all worked fine on my Windows 7 machine, I just clicked the compatability mode that goes all the way back to Windows 95. I had used those games on LGA 775 and Z87 hardware too.

My old games consoles Sega Mega drive etc, well my lads found them in storage, had to let them all go haha, the kids love playing old games more than I did.

Even my monitor has presets for old game resolutions, handy for the 1st few Comand & Conquer titles. many old games also appear on the likes of steam etc.

Due to the fact that a single PC can do so much, I saw no point in a huge pile of old macs, pc's and servers I had sitting in a cuboard, wife was pretty pleased when I chucked them in the local skip, and I got some looks from others there when I dumped the huge Dell haha.

Would be interesting to hear what games are causing so much trouble for you that you require this extraordinary route.

Edit, there are also dozens of emulators for games from the ZX Spectrum, C64 days and so forth, as a quick google search shows.

You can download emulation software that will play old games on your rig? Or have you had a look at GOG (Good Old Games) that have a lot of old games made to work on modern operating systems.

Your method of replacing parts and setting up a 'test build' sounds like it will cost more than it is worth?

love a bit of dosbox emulation :) and use VMs for the OSs between DOS & now. Used to emulate old Atari games too, but not done that for a while. Much easier than getting the ancient beast out of the loft and trying to make it work again...

Please excuse the delay as I haven't had the necessary time to compose a response (and I was hoping not to mention what I'm about to say here, but needs must to make sure everyone knows what I'm dealing with).

The issues that require older operating systems and those running in virtual machines are related to a handful of visual novels I have where those I'm going to run in a VM while originally DOS games were updated to run within modern windows operating systems, but some of them (and this is out of a total of 5 games) will only work with a 16 or 32 bit operating system which is why the original compatibility system was originally configured to run a 32-bit OS and was changed to a 64-bit OS after I found that they were pretty happy running in a virtualised OS (these games are still being sold today (don't ask for links because... Rules) and it states on the back that compatibility will all systems is not guaranteed).

The other two were broken in part or in full by windows 8.1 where the font used by one has vanished (there isn't any use in posting a grab of the message I get since even I don't even know what it means) meaning the in game text can't be read, and the second doesn't run at all since I get as far as the pre-start screen but as soon as I hit the start button I get the game window and seconds after I get a 'this game has stopped working' message and the event viewer logs only come back with an access violation error which I haven't been able to fix which is why I'm sticking to windows 7 for this lot (and this doesn't include the codec that was removed in windows 8 that broke another game which wouldn't work until I removed the startup video from the gamers installation folder).

Also, the likelihood of this gaming system being upgraded with the exception of the graphics card is extremely slim, so it wouldn't matter if it was based on a processor socket type that wasn't going to get anything beyond what is available since that part is unlikely to get upgraded, but I'm putting together theoretical build lists based on intel socket 1150 and 1151 along with AMD socket AM3+ (in case I want to upgrade to a zen processor should they ever come out) although, I will only be making build lists for the emulation system based on intel processors.

As for having my current plan costing more then it's worth, if the test goes well or needs adjustment outside of the GPU (I doubt that I'd need an R9 380 to do PS2 emulation) then it won't cost since the emulation system isn't going to be configured until I know how the card does (I know I could just get a long HDMI cable, but I'd rather have the system right next to the TV).

Someone crashed into me when I had my Volkswagen.

I'll never buy another one, I'll stick to Lada.

So you have 5 old games you struggle to run?

But cannot name the games?

OK

Put JAST USA memorial collection special edition into google where the first link should direct you to the shop that sells it (I have the original version of that set which was originally two games plus a bonus item with the other three being part of another set which I also own), and hope that I don't get in trouble here for just mentioning adult content (which is why I mentioned the reason for not mentioning the name of that set being in relation to the rules).

The other two (which I didn't bother to name since I was a bit pressed for time, but I could actually mention since they aren't adult) are Ai Yori Aoshi (missing font) and Ever 17: the Out of Infinity (broken beyond belief), and before you say to go back to the publisher, they shut up shop several years ago so there won't be any form of patches available.

And going slightly off the normal running of this thread, if I can get the current desktop back to full working order I'll put all the hardware (probably excluding the power supply since it's a 7 year old akasa PSU and it's probably better to start afresh in that area) into a new case since the one I used doesn't currently have a functioning power light (only because the the front panel header for the power LED was a two connector and not a split connector which the motherboard needed) and would make it look a bit more modern alongside the gaming system when it is actually built.
