Im looking for a compact camera and this stands out for build quality, I know it had a problem with af but has now been fixed with firmware.

I can get it for £345 and £50 cash back so £295

Is there anything else worth looking at around this price?

Oh and already have a d90 so not looking for dslr

Thanks

Not got to be interchangeable but prefer a manual zoom lens

I forget where I read it but apparently the AF on the M is awful. I see the RX100 recommended so much though. I'm guessing this is a smaller camera for when you don't want to cart the DSLR.

Yes pretty much the d90 is too big sometimes so doesnt get the use it deserves, most of the time I just use my s4, I have a panasonic fz38 too but that dont get used either as I find it too light, so looking for something compact metal bodied with a manual lens

EOS-m has been abandoned in Europe and the US due to lack of sales. The last of the old stock are just being sold off cheap to clear inventory.

Look for a m43 camera or a Nikon 1 (especially since you have Nikon glass).

Wouldn't go with a Nikon 1 personally. I don't see the point in interchangeable lenses on such a small sensor. RX100 or the mk2 would be what I would go for if it had to be truly compact. Personally I would ditch the D90 and just get a Fuji X-E2 or something. It's very small, but not pocketable, but it looks cool enough to carry anywhere. Most importantly though, it will produce files much better than the D90 and almost rivals many full frame camera's in many respects.

EOS M? I don't think it's possible to make a camera less inspiring...

Fuji, Olympus and Panasonic all seem to have their fans.

I treated Mrs HJ to a Panasonic LX7 last week to compliment her DSLR kit.

The M is a failure

It is howvere much better following a firmware upgrade that addressed the significant issues with AF.

I still wouldn't bother and would recommend any of the Fujifilm XF mount cameras and lenses. I picked up a X-Pro 1 a year ago and love it. It's not perfect for every situation (no cameras is). There are heaps of deals on at the moment.

Canon Powershot G16, built like a tank and coming from a DSLR it doesn't feel like a massive step down operationally or in image quality. Lens is equivalent to 28-140 mm f1.8-2.8. I'm really happy with it.

£309 from the HK based retailer with a popular youtube channel.

RX100 will have better image quality and low light performance but the Canon has a faster lens and doesn't feel as fiddly to use. Video on the Canon is better too, if that's important.

Fuji X-M1 with the 16-50mm lens for £430 and cashback claim of £100, bringing your total to £330.

I am really tempted to get this as a toy until I looked at the primes...ouch.

I've tried the RX100, it is tiny, actually too tiny. The design is very flat, very smooth and it is like holding a bra of soap.

Not good when it is that expensive. A bit of grippy texture would be nice.

EOS-M had reasonably accurate (for static subjects) but very slow AF. A firmware update doubled the AF speed.

Personally I think Canon crippled it in software, realised their mistake and fixed, but by that time the damage was done, the word was out, and nobody wanted it. Serves them right.

I've seen good deals on the kit with EF adaptor. With a 22mm pancake I'm tempted.

Is it certain Canon are abandoning the format? I'd have thought it's such an expanding market they'd be stupid not to keep the M mount and bring out a model with dual pixel AF...

I looked at the EOS M and it felt and handled well in the shop. The AF is slow and because the that and no flip screen I went for the SONY NEX5R with a O2 priority £50 voucher I purchased the NEX5R.
A solid build and great IQ.
There only down side for me is I have a Canon DSLR and lens ! ! !

No official word. They haven't panned the format, only it looks like it will only be sold in Asia. One of the lenses has been on sale for months in Asia but was never even announced in Europe or NA. The current em1 model has been on a fire sale to clear stock, there has been no announcements of the second model being released outside Asia.
