Just read this on the moveable rear wing...

Next season the F-duct will be outlawed and instead all cars will feature a rear wing flap that can only be used when the driver remains a certain distance behind the car he is chasing. When activated, the flap will replicate the F-duct's effect of reducing drag, in theory making overtaking much easier as the driver ahead cannot deploy the wing in defence.

I don't understand the bit about the driver in front not being able to deploy his in defence...how will that work is it electronically monitored who pressed theirs first, or is it just open to interpretation.

What if the driver in front is at a point where he would normally use the device but someone behind him decides to use it?

It's not very clear

think its stupid because the driver in front cant defend against it. just because you can drive a few 10ths faster doesnt mean you should be infront, overtaking skill is as big a part of racing as nailing a lap.

It's the Formula One "Bull-**** Rule Du Jour™". It won't add to the show, it's just a pointless piece of gimmicky crapola that shows that TPTB haven't got a bloody clue.

Big tyres, single-plane wings, bit of GE bodywork on the bottom and a fuel tank size limit a bit lower than the one we have now. It's not rocket science. Get it done, Jean.

Although i agree with what they are trying to do [in principal] its not going to work. We will just find ways around it :)

We're having complicated, electronically activated rear wing adjusters with lots of software to control who can use them...

As opposed to the bit of tube f-duct...

Ummmm...Riiiiight....

What JRS said.

Crap idea.

Read what you just quoted, it will only work if you remain within a certain distance behind the car in front. It's not something they will be using every lap when they hit a straight, it'll only work if they're jammed up someones gearbox for a while.

Utterly stupid idea though I can see why they've done it, watching cars all stacked up because they can't overtake gets boring but this isn't the way to fix it really.

For the love of God, deuse and I just agreed on something. All we need now is sunama to agree, and we've got ourselves a harbinger of the apocalypse! That's how bad this idea is. And if that doesn't say it all....

I'm afraid that I have to agree with some reports that I have read, that suggest that the removal of adjustable front wings, and the addition of a limited adjustable rear wing, car stability will be very hit and miss, one of the advantages this year was that the drivers could adjust the front wing as the car got lighter during the race, next year, they'll not be able to do that.

Oh well.. could be wrong..

hmm, with this rear wing, wont it make the overtaking pretty much unimpressive and give every overtake due to the use of the wing?

It will just have drivers sit and wait for the wing to be activated then breeze past on the straight.

overtaking wont be about skill and balls any more just about a little flap that moves and you drive past.

who would want to risk an overtaking manoeuvre when you can wait and get past easily on a straight?

I read it as basically a way of treating the problems they have with traction when following a slower car up close.
Will not give them any EXTRA speed, just enable the drivers to negate the negative effects of following closely?

Or am I reading this totally wrong?

I also agree with Montezemolo that the rules for the new wings should be plane and simple.

It won't help over taking. If a driver activates the rear wing the guy in front will just use his Kers to combat it.

it will be like the 2nd car having an f duct and the front car not.

This! All we will see now from the drivers, except Kobayashi (here's hoping) is the exact situation utajoker has stated, lower drag, increase straight line speed with the rear wing combo and Kers and you get drag races down the long straight bits, hell why not make all circuits banked ovals and we'll just watch Nascar :D

So, the first question that comes to mind is: could the lead car deploy his flap if approaching a backmarker?
