Thoughts on TT mk1

These and the Audi A2 are future classics imo. TT is a style icon and yhe A2 a design icon. I wish I had a nice big barn and a pot of cash to buy them and store them!

My quattro Sport was fantastic.

That's cool. I'm still not entirely sold on the red, silver and black is much more discreet and subtle. How did you get on with it, any major issues?

I had a good half-hour long drive in the red one, really gelled with it which I wasn't expecting - quite a rare thing. Found it quite involving too, again unexpected. It does seem with a few further tweaks you could really have something special, although it felt quite an occasion as is.

Didn't check to see if the Haldex was working properly though, although I'm pretty sure I felt it shuffling the power around, and I neglected to check whether both windows dropped or not - but I think they did.

Wasn't a full-on inspection though, but did have a good look around it. Dash was all OK too.

Still tempted... This one had done 103,000 miles though, so been well used. Didn't really feel it though, no errant knocks, clunks, rattles, whines etc. Gearlever could have probably done with rebushing though.

I have always been a fan of the TT having previously owned a regular 225 so the quattro Sport was just the next level. My qS was a really well looked after example with 39,000 miles and had just had a full cambelt service with plugs, pumps and diverter valve so it didn't want for anything. I had it for 12 months and did 6000 miles in it and the only issue I had was a cracked coil pack which was replaced by Audi for free.

Aside from that it was extremely reliable, by 05/06 most of the common TT issues had been ironed out so it's very rare to get a qS with dashpod/gauge issues or failing stereo.

My favourite part was the interior which always felt special, the seats are great (I would say non Recaro examples are worth at least £1000 less) and the alcantara steering wheel and trim just add to it. I would image that steering wheel is quite bald/shiny by 103000 miles so maybe factor in replacing/refurbing it.

I also liked that it was a proper quattro GmbH product, not just a 225 with bucket seats and a remap. The ride is much better over the 225, less harsh but more composed and allows you to really attack a good B road with confidence. Obviously it will understeer when pushed, as is the nature of the chassis but you have so much grip up to that point I never found it a problem. Likewise with the Haldex, you boot it and it goes, it never scrabbles and always feels 4WD so I didn't find that a problem either.

The only thing I never understood was the tyre sizes, the wheels were staggered 8x18 front and 8.5x18 rear but it wears 235/40/18 all round. Other unique bits to the qS are black roof (duh) and wing mirrors, gloss black front grill and matt black exhaust tips. The battery was moved into boot and it lost the spare wheel and much of the interior which makes it a useful 75kg lighter than a regular car. Losing much the interior does make it much louder on the motorway but I did a 1600 mile tour of the scottish highlands and it was fine, plus averaged 39mpg which is a bonus.

Gratuitous picture time, I do love the look of them and miss mine a lot. Oh and it goes without saying that Avus Silver is the best colour...
