Hi

I’m thinking of replacing my home server with a 1950X based build. During periods of low usage, I.e. just sat there idle acting as a file server, would it be Power efficient or are they power hungry chips even at idle?

I use my current server for other tasks such as bulk video file conversion etc rather than just a basic file server etc.

Thanks

Mike

Can't say if the 1950x differs greatly from the 1920x, but according to HWmonitor, mine consumes around 46W at idle mildly undervolted. (that's just the cpu) At full pelt, it definitely shows it being around the 170-185W mark so might not be too inaccurate.

I still need to get hold of a power meter to more accurately measure how much my pc actually draws.

For those of you considering this CPU the fact is you are going to get MUCH better value by choosing one of the Ryzen CPUs - Ryzen 7 1800X is now at around $420 for 8/16 and the 7 1700 (8/16 again) has been on sale for as little as $299. Now, if you need the high thread counts for work on things like content creation and you still want to be able to run games it will be competitive (read: not the king of the hill) when you are running your games. So, if you do more than 50% of your computing time is gaming then go for an Intel CPU OR one of the Ryzen 5/7 consumer CPUs.
