Threadripper & System Spec Question

I need more cores :-)

I'm seriously thinking about moving to the dark side, having been an Intel user for many years, the 1950X seems like much better value for money that the 7960X.

I'm looking for more cores as I do quite a bit of video & photo work.

So a couple of questions if I may as it's been a couple of years since I got my current rig.

I'm planning on reusing as much of my kit as I can to keep costs sensible.

I'll need Mobo, CPU, cooler(water, i've got a good custom loop) and possibly RAM.

1st Question, is there a refresh round the corner, a TR2 or the likes that I would be better off waiting for.

2nd Question I've got 64GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2400 RAM. Can I use this in a TR setup as RAM prices are crazy just now.

Have I missed anything ?

Can someone recommend a decent MoBo and waterblock for a TR. I do want to try and overclock it a bit.

Thanks

If you're doing video and photowork, stick with Intel as many photo apps (looking at you Photoshop) are still mainly single threaded. Same for video apps with the exception of rendering out the finished production. Threadripper really only comes into its own for 3D modelling, virtual machines, development and scientific simulations.

New TR is due out Aug/Sep so this may change if it shows the same improvements as the 2700x.

Yes, your 2400 mem will work, but you wont be getting the best out of the system, Ryzen loves faster mem.

Regarding mobo I think they're all pretty good. Using an Asus X399-A Prime myself and found it great. Was going to go for the top end Asus board but the price seemed a bit too extreme for my requirements. Many rank the ASRock highly.
Just noticed ASRock now offer a Micro ATX TR board - awesome :D.
Regarding memory, I remember reading using slower ram is like underclocking the CPU. Think 3000Mhz+ is recommended with I think 3200 being the ideal (that's what I use anyway :D).
I'd wait for TR2 now personally unless really need the multi-core performance now. Hopefully the talked about 2800X CPU's are being reserved for 2950X sales, well, at least the best of the them anyway

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll definitely wait until TR2 comes out although the rumours are a bit confusing as to what the upgrades might be....

The reason I need cores is that I'm regularly maxing out my 5960 within Adobe Premier when editing 4K video. Just finished a small 15 minute project with a lot of video stabilisation and the cpu was maxed out as was the 64GB of RAM. Also feeling the pain when I'm transcoding videos to get them all in the same format for editing. If only the 7960 was not silly money...

ThreadRipper will be a massive improvement on your workloads. Refresh is due august, there will be a price difference of around £200 for current threadripper and the refresh.

Definitely wait for TR2 if you can, even if you don't go for one then hopefully TR1 will see some discounts, or maybe consider going for the Epyc 'P' parts if you can't wait, they'll let you use much much more memory (RDIMM support)

E.G the 7401p is 24c48t with a 2GHz base clock and a 3 GHz turbo - cost just under 1K though, and the base clock might be a little low?

Total costs might be higher too as you need DDR4 Rdimms @ 2666 - and you need at least 8 of them, motherboards are about the same price as the high end TR boards though.
