Can anyone tell me what kind of upload speed you would get by using a 3G phone with a laptop?

All the operators now offer HSDPA - coverage varies though. Of course you need an HSDPA device and it only improves the downlink. Depending on the stage of network rollout and the device you have the downlink speed will be anything from 1.2, 1.8, 3.6, 7.3, 10.2, 14.4 Mbit/s. This data rate is shared between all users so you'll only see close to that if you’re the only user in the cell instantaneously. The uplink remains unchanged at 64 or 128 kbit/s. Some operators might be offering 384 kbit/s in the uplink now.

Without HSDPA 3G downlink is good for 384 kbit/s close to the mast, 128 kbit/s at cell edge.

Next year we’ll see HSUPA which takes the uplink to over 5 Mbit/s eventually.

For HSDPA coverage; see http://www.three.co.uk/personal/products_services_/mobile_broadband_/rollout_map.omp

If you are not in one of the areas that have been upgraded yet, you will get 384k (regular 3G speeds).

The web is only restricted in the sense of blocking adult content/illegal content. Its open unlike the web browsing a few years ago.

Re: Upload speed. If you are in a 3G area (R99 - no HSDPA) you'll get 128k. If you are in an HSDPA area, its 384k. The next step is to launch HSUPA adding greater upload; but thats still a year or so away from mass implementation.

Today the "G" on my phone turned into an "H" - does that mean my area's been upgraded to HSdpa?

More than likely, but my phone will display a G or U then go to H when i actually access the net as its data only its not always displayed.
