Three Britons and a German have drowned off the coast of the Alga

But where do you draw the line. You see children drowning and you want to help. If you dont its going to way on your conscience a long time and then youve got the press to deal with and the screeming mothers. I dont know what id do.

Could you condem a child to certain death and watch it happen?

I'd say you draw the line at your own ability. Its a tough call, but someone that know's they are not a strong swimmer should not attempt it.

But as you say, its something that would play on your conscience for the rest of your life.

The problem with drowning people is that they are in panic and will do anything to stay above water.

This can include pushing the people who are trying to help them under the water.

It was a fairly rough sea from what I can gather, If had my wetsuit on that would have been enough for me to decide to jump in and have a go at saving them.
Fair play to the ones who did "have a go", they died trying.
That to me isn't a waste.

Diving down under the flailing victim is the answer...
Learned that in my rescue course.
Then you can take control of their flapping clingy arms before they drown you.

To go under them is the best way? but isn't tht the same as them pulling you down.

I remeber seeing life gaurd training whre they pull you buy your chin (my sis did life gaurd training). But if i was drowing id be like just get me out of here. I think you had to be on conscience for the chin thing to work?

Once you've come up from underneath them, grabbed hold of them and held them up they start to calm down a bit.. then you can actually give instructions that they will follow.
Yep one leg either side of them, their body on your chest and you either hold their arms or cup the chin..
Some like to maintain eye contact for extra reassurance though.

Heard on the news one set of kids lost both parents and the others lost one parent.

Its awful, can only imaging how bad they must be feeling..

Apparently one eye witness said he saw the kids get into trouble but the current brought them back to the beach, he was then amazed that they went back out into the water leading to the tragic drowning of the rescuers.

No life guards there at this time of year and very little warnings, but still you would have thought a scare would be more than enough of a warning not to go out into the sea

I dont think common sense can come into the decision you make when its your own kids.

Yeah tahts why i said it was such a waste of life because they stupidly went back. Furthermore they may be to young to relise what they have done but when they are older they are going to relise taht they killed 3 people. And one of them lost both parents in it? i thought they were only men? or did he only have a dad?

2 women and 2 men died. The parents of 2 children both died. As did the mother of 2 other children. All came from the same town and the kids are all best friends. The German man who died was saving his child too.

no lifeguards as its not their holiday season now..just because its half term here means nowt in the algarve

no doubt the press will look for somebody to blame though..its like accidents dont happen anymore

from what i've read there were signs all over the place and local surfers even warned them not to go into the sea
