Is it right that unless you can get a 3G signal with a Three SIM then you won't be able to make calls either? Or have I got that wrong?

just now with my O2 payg sim I get no 3g almost from Dundee right up to Aberdeen, about 70 miles, so I'd get no phone signal from Three unless 3G comes up on the phone?

I only ask because I'd like an unlimited data package that I can use tethering with, Three seems the only option but it'd a 12 month contract

They've turned off some / most of their 2G masts but they do still have some, so if they still have their 2G masts up there you should be ok.
 
I was up in the lake district a month ago, I got "roaming" in some places. I heard 3 uses other network's 2G masts sometimes.
 
Just to be completely clear for the OP, on the 2G masts (provided by EE IIRC) you can only get voice and texts, no Internet access. If you have signal but 3G doesn't appear, then you are on the 2G masts and can only make calls and send/receive SMSs.

Three have stopped unlimited tethering for new contracts now, unlimited data is still around as before.
 
yeah it was having absolutely no reception at all for phonecalls is what I was worried about

tethering is limited to 4GB per month on the £15 a month deal no, so not as good as I thought

my internet at the house is quite slow, was thinking of upgrading my phone to a 4G capable one and using it for big files etc, not really gonna work out like that with 4GB allowance
 
This thread has been interesting. Just dumped Virgin for Three, just waiting for my number to port over to start using it.

Virgin these last few months have been terrible for internet, my primary use. Which is a shame. Wish they would start rolling out 4g or just doing anything to be honest as Virgin is much more convenient and cost effective for me. Ah well
 
Darn, just got a Virgin SIM today to try out for a month ! Can't be worse than giffgaff, surely....

Three is excellent, but I've found coverage a little bit patchy. I guess there is always a compromise somewhere.
 
I wanted to switch to the 12 month one so I could get the home signal box, but I don't want to lose unlimited tethering. I don't tether often, but when I do, it's nice to know that I have no limits.
 
Has something gone badly wrong with the 4g roll out across the board because every network seems to have become rubbish, loads of my mates have changed network because of terrible signal only to be completely dissatisfied with their new network as it seems have folk who's comments i read online.

I read somewhere that three wouldn't change a contract, I'm on the £15 one plan so will be with this for as long as they leave it alone

I think you'd be at risk of losing your current tarrif if you change anything.
 
thought I'd add this....

I got a PAYG three sim and put a tenner on it to see what the coverage was like

I get 3G in places that I only got calls/texts with O2 (as I was saying there was almost no 3G between Dundee and Aberdeen - it worked all the time driving up there today!) and in the places where I got 3G with O2 the speed's are better with this Three sim

wish I did this little test before the tethering limits came in

I ended up with the £12 giffgaff goodybag but they have decided to reduce it from unlimited to 3GB now - will be ordering one of Three's sim only deals with unlimited data shortly
 
Have to say since switching from Vodafone to Three haven't had really any issues.

As some said the coverage is a bit patchy (loses its signal completely but gains it back after 5 seconds or so, and don't get any signal on Victoria platforms) but has been fine mostly.

Used it over in the US for 2 weeks where you get the "Feel at home" roaming and worked surprisingly well, although it seems the US data connections are woathfully slow compared to UK (and no 4G)
 
I can stream spotify from Dundee to Aberdeen no problem on 3, infact most of Scotland is great with 3, even up the A9 to Inverness, I use 6 - 8GB a month on all you can eat.
