Three customers - quick questions

Hi guys,

I think I'm going to be joining Three (SIM only) at the end of March (unless anyone wants to convince me otherwise? :D) and I'd just like to know if:

1. SIM only, 12 month contracts include 4G?

2. Do all of their 12 month, SIM only plans allow tethering?

I'm looking specifically at the £9.90 deal.

1) Pretty sure yes
2) I think it's only the One package upwards that has tethering included, otherwise it's an option
 
Make sure you have reception.. I've just switched my daughters phone back to o2 following a 1 month stint with Three with no to limited reception indoors.

Thanks for the pointer! I was actually going to go for a 1 month contract to start with to see how I got on. Got a friend with Three who said exactly the same - great service out and about but little or nothing indoors :(

2. Officially only "One" plans support tethering but tethering does work on "Ultimate Internet" though for the time being.
 
I'm on the pay as you go £15 a month and they throttle me from 3pm till 12am its a joke.. Can't stream YouTube or anything strenuous at all... After 12 I get about 12meg.. What a joke..
 
I'm on the One plan rolling monthly, and have to say data reception where I use it is far better than I had with Tesco/O2 - but I have to admit Voice reception is a bit more mixed

I use my mobile at home as the normal phone as our landline is not unlimited free calls, and whilst I seem to get decent signal, I get random "silences" in my calls, suddenly phone call goes silent, they can't hear me, I can't hear them, then after about 30-60 seconds, it bursts back into life, and all good, for another 10 mins or so, then same again

sometimes I get "squarks" instead of the silence - never had it once with my Tesco/O2 signal- any ideas ?

other than that - very happy - as I use data more than I use voice
 
There's a thread on hot UK deals that says the price is going back up to £20pm at the end of January for new customers.

Did you give them a ring mate? 0800 358 9341. I just spoke to a really helpful sales advisor with a few questions and he checked my postcode and said that my home address is a poor signal area and that when I come to buy I should mention that to their team and they would include a free booster so that I could use my phone indoors :)

I think Vodafone offered me something similar once when I complained and they offered me Sure Signal. £100 :mad:

I'm on ultimate internet 200 and tethering is blocked for me. I also have poor signal inside the house and was thinking to ask for one of these boosters. Does it affect the WiFi signal from router at all ?

That's the biggest issue with Three: they only have high frequency spectrum, which doesn't penetrate buildings well, AT ALL.

For that reason and the fact that their 3G coverage is patchy, I chose EE.

In my area I often just find my signal going to almost nothing rather than totally dropping out. My friend with Vodafone often drops out completely while I still have 2-3 bars and DC-HSDPA!

Depends a lot on building construction tbh, but Three's bands do penetrate buildings the worst: O2 and Vodafone are the best for penetration (they have 800 MHz spectrum, which is very good indoors). Therefore, I'm surprised that Vodafone drops out indoors in your area.

I'm on EE, which is somewhere in the middle: quite high spectrum, but not as high as Three's (which in my experience, doesn't penetrate buildings well).

However, Three also have some 800MHz spectrum now, which they will be using for 4G in certain areas (when they eventually launch it), so that will certainly improve things indoors.
 
Just to add to the above really, I have been looking to move from Vodafone as coverage wise in terms of making a call has been fine. However, I am trying to use data is another matter completely its gotten to the point of late I am thinking about paying off the remainder of my contract and moving to EE or Three.
 
Lack of data coverage where I am is my biggest gripe with Vodafone and the reason for me leaving! Calls are good, indoors/outdoors, but data is nearly non-existent! GPRS nearly all the time - which is unusable with an iPhone :(

Vodafone's (and O2's) 2G network(s) is (are) excellent, but their 3G is woefully inadequate. Indeed, Vodafone recently got told off for their 'lack' of 3G (understatement of the century) by Ofcom.

Therefore, for smartphones, EE and Three are by far the best. With EE, you're more likely to get a signal than Three, but Three have unlimited data. It all comes down to what each one is like in your area and the amount of data you use. I'd recommend EE personally.
