Throttling

I'm just trying to download a torrent at my step-dads house and I can't seem to get above 35kB/s download speed. The torrent is being downloaded from a private tracker and has plenty of seeds and historically will in the majority of pervious downloads on my own connection max out at the full download speed that the adsl connection is capable of. I've forwarded the ports in his router correctly and utorrent icon is green and says network connection is ok, so I'm lost as to why it's downloading so slowly.

The connection is BT and it can happily hit 800kB/s with an http download, so why is this torrent so god damn slow. Do BT throttle torrents so severely that they cap at 35kB/s?!?!?!?!?!?!!

Yes, yes they do.

I find it's a lot better at night, but during the day you won't get very far using Bittorrent - BT throttle it to hell and back.

Yup, tried encryption and various ports and still the same download cap.

I always knew BT Broadband was crap, but I didn't expect it to be this crap.

If you want to Torrent with BT, do it after-hours. I can get in the region of 500KB/s at night.

Plus that's not the worst thing about BT. They throttle torrents but so far i've found them to be pretty lenient with standard downloading.

The problem comes when you get your connection reset onto a slow profile and left there for 3 days. If you try to call them you get a robot from Delhi reading from a handbook. Nobody seems to even have a clue what "reset my profile" means.

That is until I threatened to withold money from them. Then it took about quarter of an hour for it to go back up. Pathetic little lice.

Well I seem to be getting throttled quite severely by Virgin Media despite leaving all my downloading until after the times specified in their traffic management table.

Cause for complaint?

If its the first time its played up just down to some issues i guess, if it was the ubr it would be like this all the time.

BT seem to throttle all non HTTP downloads (with probably some exceptions) at peak times. The trouble is, they seem to be making the peak times larger and larger.

Well it's down to exactly 25% of my usual max speed, which leads me to think it's a throttling issue.

It's not unheard of that Virgin's STM kicks in when it shouldn't.
If it starts happening more often and you can prove it should not be happening then you have a cause for complaints.

BT throttle like MAD.

between about 3pm and 10pm is throttled like HELL, Http downloads and torrents are worthless then..

however when its not in those hours i get a fast download speed from them (479Kbs) all the time normally.
