Thunder and lightning, very very frightning

Lightning once struck the house over the road when I lived in Hampshire.

It knocked the chimney down.

I'm with the 'how on earth can a bolt of lightning destroy an entire house' camp.

But I’m just a poor boy and nobody loves me,
He’s just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity,

Easy come easy go,
Will you let me go?

The high voltage lab at uni has a lightning similator with model buildings, more often than not the mock house catches fire :)

When I was on holiday with my parent driving through the vouge mountain range in the south of france when we got cought in a massive electrical storm. Bolts were hitting the ground all around the car, some were about 10 meters away and it was utterly deafening. Was scary but also really beutiful in some weird power of nature way. Either way I've never been so glad of the farady cage effect when sitting inside a metal frame :)

Think I must be the only one to love storms then :D I've took my chances and gone walking at night alone in the pouring rain. Could easily mistake the weather for the tropics and there would be loud bangs and huge flashes of light. It has been so loud sometimes that even I do find some sort of shelter, I think the safest place is a car? :p

A house over the road got hit a last year, blew half the roof off and set it on fire. We thought it was our house, nearly jumped out my skin when I heard it.
Pretty much what it did to the nearby house I believe. There was certainly plenty of smoke and fire. Destroyed as in not liveable in, for the pedants. :)

Oh, and I'm glad people got the title reference, even though it was slightly wrong (now fixed). :)

When you say it 'destroyed' the house/chalet, what exactly do you mean? Like tornado style completely flatten it or a couple of tiles missing?

It didn't flatten it like a tornado would, it spli the roof from one side of the chalet to the other and took a wall out at which point it collapsed.

We had a huge storm here last night - lightning hit the nearby theater. Close to us, and the tallest building around (with a lightning rod) so we're safe :D

(or at least I think we are . . .)

Best storm I've seen was last Thursday's here in Glasgow, thanks to Spanish/English weather playing with each other apparently. Was fun seeing BAE shipyards getting hit but I think it took out my TV, annoying as I thought I'd switched everything off at the start of it.

saw a pimpin thunderstorm last year with the lightning almost being a blue/purple in colour (a lot cooler that ** standard yellow variety)

didn't see it total any houses though...

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!
Oh Mumma Mia, Mumma Mia, Mumma Mia Let Me Go!

My TV got struck when I was about 6 years old and then a few years later a Tree in out Garden got struck and knocked all of out fence down!
Since then I have been terrified and shake whenever I think it's going to thunder.
I hate the summer because of this.

I love thunder storms myself but wouldnt want to get too close to one. Closest ive ever been to a lightening strike is when i was in Canada last summer, took my niece and nephew out to the city for the day. Anyways my niece was on my case about going to the CN Tower so thought what the hell might as well as i always tend to go at least once when im there.
Anyways it started off bright and sunny then got a bit cloudy and menacing etc. By the time we got up to the tallest part of the tower it was very windy and stormy. They ended up shutting down the observation decks as above us we were constantly being hit by lightening bolts...it was very loud and kinda scary...my poor nephew was crying his eyes out but ny niece the nutter was loving it...had a big smile on her face:p.

Last time i was in Toronto, i was at the local park near lake ontario...my bro lives only across the road. Anyways went for a walk and looked across the lake where i could just make out the CN Tower and i could see it being hit a few times by lightening...shame i didnt have my camera with me...but suffice to say it was truly awesome. Gave me a good idea as what happened when i was up there with my niece and nephew.

My dads office, which is next door to my house got hit by lightning when he was in it. I often wake up in a storm, sometimes the house does actualy shake. You can imagine what It's like waking up with your house shaking, thought it was the end of the world. Anyway, it blew up his fax machine and a few other things.

When I was a kid I use to run across the garden as a dare with my brother, now that was scarey.
