Thunderbolt?

I can see a lot of laptop manufacturers inserting it into a USB port like Sony to save space as for better or for worse most laptop manufacturers will still produce laptops with VGA and HDMI ports.
I can't personally. You already have USB/eSATA (a.k.a. eSATAp) combo ports. Using USB for Thunderbolt, would be very confusing for consumers.

mDP is even smaller than USB so if laptop manufacturers are looking to save space, the choice is simple. :)

I wondered about the USB inplementation as well, bit odd...

So eSATA/USB combo on one side and USB/TB on the other. There is a reason manufacturers put the number of USB ports they do on computers. I just can't see them removing one to make way for an mDP which would (for the majority of people) only be used for lightspeed (with lightspeed being a minor player outside of the Apple sphere). All depends on the popularity of Thunderbolt I guess. It could just end up like the Firewire/USB debate with a FW port put on as an afterthought by most manufacturers rather than a main feature.
