Time Capsule updated to 1TB and 2TB models

getting tempting, can i use it as a time machine disc and a Nas drive for media at the same time?

just wish it had some redundancy built into it, 2*1gb drives i'd be all over it.

It's on the UK store now.

1Tb - £229 (£203.55 HE)
2Tb - £379 (£336.95 HE)

I''ve already filled my 1Tb TC and I've got another 500Gb HDD full-up as well.
I think I'm going to have to find a different solution to upgrading to the 2Tb.

I'm starting to think that a networked HDD (or even a mini-server) with the capacity to add additional storage later on connected to the TC is the answer.

That way I could use the 1Tb TC purely as a Time Machine drive and then use the other HDD/server for all my storage needs.

Does anyone know if the TC will access external drives connected via Ethernet or does it only work over USB?

An Airport Extreme + server might be a better idea as I could re-coup some money by selling the TC (although now I'm going to get a lot less than I paid for it).

Providing you partition the drive (which you can do), then yes

Yeah drobo always seems a better option in my opinion to TC, apple are going to have to address storage solutions soon. A lot of my friends who are not so computer savvy are asking me about backup and its surprising how much stuff they have. You can grab a drobo and network adapter for 400 on the bay new

The Drobo is tempting but I wouldn't use it with USB - seems like a serious bottleneck.

I'd totally forgotten about the network adapter you can get for the Drobo, that might be worth a look.

Somplace on the Internet (and I cannot say because they sell computer hardware) is selling Drobo's with a free DroboShare.

And you'll never get 480Mbps with USB2 - even Firewire 400 is quicker because of the way it works.

Cheers for the info guys,

I wasn't aware of how the Drobo hooked up. Back to the drawing board then I guess.

Old PC (or custom built silent new PC) + lots of disks + Openfiler or FreeNAs = cheap, expandable NAS.

I have one at home serving a TB of shared* disk space.

* Shared between OS X and two Windows boxes (Vista and Windows 7)

Just swap the hard disk in your time capsule, it looks rather easy.

WD green 2TB is down to 169, by far the cheepest solution, replace the 500gb with a 2T. Wehn you fill that, swap the 1T inside the TC with another.
