Ive had my ST24 about a year now and I have been putting a lot of consideration into changing it. I would really love to have a small car but I do quite a lot of fishing so i need to able to get all of my gear in the back (hence the mondeo) and I cant really afford to run a car and a van. I quite fancied a 200sx (not sure how big they are in the back) but im swaying towards getting something roundabout group 16 or less as im still only 21 and I dont really want to be paying any more then a grand insurance.

I will probably be looking to spend around £3000 - £5000. What cars should I be looking at in this bracket? Dont really want to go the v6 route again just yet, fuel is killing me :(

Any suggestions?

Anything for this sort of cash thats likely to be both a) more economical than the ST24 and b) more fun to drive than the ST24 is unfortunately also highly likely to be c) Smaller than the ST24 and thus not big enough for your fishing stuff.

What are your reasons for changing it? If its purely for running costs, you could downgrade to a 2.0 16v. If you want fun... well.... a Clio 172 and a trailer? :p

Would a Seat Toledo V5 be too hard on the petrol? Great car, great engine, great spec and dirt cheap. It's a bit smaller than the Mondeo but still big enough to put all your gear in.

You can't get a load of fishing gear inc poles and a tackle box in a saloon - doesn't really work :(

Needs to be a hatchback or an Estate. Well, from my fishing days it did anyway. Maybe he travels lighter..

I can get all my fishing gear into the car no problem. I have to put one of the back seats down though. All my rods and nets are for fly fishing though, the biggest rod being 14', don't know if that helps any.
In fact, my Toledo took 3 people and their fishing gear on a 400 mile round trip quite comfortably last August. It all fitted in no problem. The only time it can be a problem is if something wide needs to be put into the back and it can't fit through the gap.

Still don't really see what advantage a V5 will give him over his ST24. It's not going to be any more economical and it certainly won't be any more fun.

He's going to need to try something smaller and see if he can get his gear in with the seats folded.

I am a carp angler and often go fishing for days on end so my car is usually very full.

I suppose i could get a tow bar and a trailer but I removed the tow bar of my ST cause it looked ugly.

Used to have a roof rack on my fiesta but soon lost faith in that idea when it came off whilst doing about 65mph on the A500. I was not best pleased as there was about £1500's worth of tackle on the thing.

Yeah, I suppose you're right.
I know it isn't really smaller but how about an Audi A4 Avant 2.5TDi? Plenty of power and torque and plenty of room, but probably nowhere near as 'fun' as the ST24. This is a hard one; A hatchback/estate with plenty of room, more fun than an ST24 and easier on the juice. All the more practical hatchbacks which are still fun usually don't have great economy, especially in that budget. In fact, the Mondeo seems to fit the bill perfectly albeit a 2.0 16v.

Ive just been looking on auto trader. Xsara vts 2.0 16v are pretty cheap but I would be worried about reliability. would have to see how big they are with the seats down.
