Hi guys this may be a bit long winded but i hope you can help me! Ever since i left school in 2003 i have been stuck in a job i hate due to family pressure! I spent 4 years doing a modern apprentiship (sp) for bricklaying, but now i think is the time to find a job/career i want! I have always tried to put it to the back of my mind but since i was told by the doctor in december i was suffering minor depression i believe i need to do something because as you can probably guess i feel pretty low all the time! I left school wanting to follow my dream and work with computers, whether it be a techy/programmer/sales person etc, but as fate would have it i was refused entry to a C++ course i was dying to go on at college due to low GCSE grades at school!

In around 2 weeks or maybe even 1 im being laid off of work as its gone quiet atm and i have no intentions of ever bricklaying again! It's a hard push but i need to get sorted asap due to money for rent etc! Do you guys have any advice for me please? Im guessing that because of my situation im going to have to apply for a job at lets say... PuC World and work my way up some how?! Just any advice will help me please because im just digging myself into a place i really dont want to be!

Thanks :)

try and get a job in a computer shop or low level it job. try things like computer help call centres.

then while you are earning study some microsoft or other other qaulifications.

Are you sure you want a career in computing?
I thought I did, did computing at uni and it's the worst decision I've ever made. It's great as a hobby. But sat behind a computer all day programming is utterly boring. especially when projects can be 6months +.

Was in a similar position 5 years ago. Working on-off for my father making timber frame kits for building houses.

Managed to get myself a job at a printers working with MS Publisher, Word and Quark.

Still there now but have worked my way up to running the network, using SBS Server and being the "fountain of knowlege" for all the editors/designers.

Luckily it's a small comany with no IT Dept, other than me. I'm even getting offers of private work outside work.

Go for any job using computers at a small company and use your time to learn xp/vista and the programmes inside out. Worked for me.

Good luck

do you know anyone that already works in a IT job??

i knew someone in another estate agent and gave him a call earlyer and got me an interview ;) if you have someone that can recomend you it will help.

if not then just keep goign into place and calling them up. make yourself known and keen

good luck :)

Also self teach yourself in the area you want to get into via books or online. Get a cheap second pc and dabble with xp/vista and a varient of linux. It'll show your keen to learn and not just another "I like computers" applicant

m8 of mine got a part time job building and fixing computers in a local computer shop. (2 days a week) He has zero knowledge of computers. He's being encouraged to just take stuff home and put it together mess about etc (lots of cheap spare parts around the shop)
But he has a good attitude to it and is also doing home computer courses.

So it is possible to get in there without qualifications.
