I've currently got a Canon 30D DSLR, but I want something that's a bit more portable :)

I'm eyeing up a couple of different options, and I'm interested in opinions from those who have first hand experience.

Panasonic LX100 - 4K video
Canon PowerShot G7X - Highest res
Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II - Longest zoom

I know I'll miss the zoom length of the 30D and its lenses, and although the 70D is within my budget, the fact that it's so big and bulky means that unless we're going somewhere special, I don't bother taking it with me.

A compact camera is much more likely to end up in my pocket when we go to places.

Have you considered a compact ystem camera like the Olympus OMD etc? gives you the flexibility of the lens system that your used to with a much smaller system which you should be more inclined to carry?

For me jumping straight to a compact is a leap to far, but if you do you should add the latest Sony RX100 to your list it is a cracking piece of kit.

What about the Panasonic GM series? They're tiny (and have an equally tiny kit 12-32mm kit lens), but have the bonus of interchangeable lenses if you want, and a m4/3 sensor means decent image quality too.

I haven't given much thought to the compact systems - mainly because I want to get away from having to change lenses. To make it portable I would need to fit a general purpose lens, which would put me into standard compact camera territory, or carry a selection of lenses with me, which wouldn't be that much different from where I am at the moment (although I appreciate there would be a bit less bulk).

The RX100 looks a decent camera, but it's got an even shorter zoom range than the other models I listed. I know I'll need to compromise if I'm moving from a DSLR to a compact, I'm just not too sure where I need to be drawing lines.

I would also vote for a CSC of some form, I have just moved from an SLR set-up to the Fuji X-E1 and love it for the capabilities and smaller size.

I have had a wealth of cameras over the last 4 years: Slr's 500D, 600D (x2) 5D1 60D Compacts: Canon G12, Samsung wifi camera of some sort, Canon S110

Basically I was trying to find something that was great quality and easy to trek around hence the compacts, but could never find a happy medium hence all the different models. That was until I came across the Fuji. Even my basic X-E1 has stacks of features over my last SLR (60D) and quality with the 23mm is just great, so much sharper, better colours and that isn't even touching on the size.

All my own opinion, just thought worth mentioning as another option.

I've handled both of these and they are definitely not pocketable, in fact they are pretty bloody huge in compact camera terms, no idea on the G7x though.

just don't get a EOS M i had one amazing pictures of anything that didn't move , any faster than a snail and its garbage , even with updated firmware focusing was atrocious sold it and got a D3200 and love it :-)

Plumped for the LX100 in the end :)

Still need to get to grips with all the options and menu settings though. Does anyone know if there's a codec available to enable previews of the RAW files in Windows 8.1? I've got the latest MS codecs that I can find, and the RAW files from the Canon 30D preview fine.
