Time for a new putter...

So, I need a new putter, as the one i'm using is a cheap, worn Howson one and to be honest it's dreadful. Dreadful grip, dreadful feel, and dreadful everything else.

I know choosing a putter is down to the individual and that I should see which ones suit me the best. This is what I have been doing over the last few weeks at the local American Golf branch. However as this is on carpet and the "green" is fairly short, it's difficult to get a good gauge. I will persevere however.

I just wanted to know your opinions on what putters are good and why, so I can get a bit of perspective.

The ones I have tried so far are varying Odyssey ones which I quite like, the new fisher ones with the mega inserts with differing colours. Some ping ones and a couple of the Taylor Made.

FYI, I'm 6'3'', putt with a straight through motion with a pendulum type swing. I use a fairly upright stance and putt fairly straight and if I miss alignment wise, its usually to the left of the hole.

Thanks

Lots of people use Odyssey putters and i personally think they are the best closely followed by Hotblade putters.

The Scotty Cameron putters for around £150 imo is just way out of this world as i can't see a great difference for the amount of money involved in a purchase.

I think you have gone about it in the best way by putting with many different putters in store, i have found that Direct Golf stores usually have good indoor putting green areas around the putters with the carpet on where you can hit around 12-15 footers usually.

Agreed, I actually tried one of the scotty cameron putters along with some of the super money rinsing Mizuno putters, and I didn't really think too much of them.

I'm still erring with Odyssey at the moment but i've tried a few Ping putters that were good too.

Choosing a putter is like choosing a wand in Harry Potter. You must let the putter choose you. And you must fall completely and hopelessly in love with your putter.

At the moment, I am in love with Callie by Yes! Nice and short at 32", 360g head weight - she basically holes them herself from inside 10 feet. If they don't go in, I blame the green - it's never Callie's or my fault. As you can probably tell, I've been reading too much Bob Rotella :p

But seriously, choice of putter is so personal. If you can, test a whole load out on an actual green at a golf club and just go for what feels right.

Btw, I'm 6 handicap and putting is the weakest part of my game :D :(

I'm still using my Taylor Made Rossa Monza that the bride bought me a couple of xmas's ago.
When I'm on song with it I rarely miss from 12'.
Nice putter with plenty of weight at the bottom.

The Scotty's and Mizuno's are a paticular taste!

I use a Newport 2 in the 33" varient and adore it. The problem with the milled putters is they have to be struck centre everytime. If you don't hit centre everytime, then you will be better off with an Odyssey 2 ball putter. They are very forgiving.

I would pop into a local course, see what selection they have and see if you can take a selection onto the putting green!

Must admit I haven't tried any of the Yes! putter as i though they looked a bit cheap. I might go back in tomorrow.

Is this the great big one that Taylor Made do? Had a quick go with it if thats the case and it didn't seem that bad.

get on the odyssey 2 ball.

OFC you need to try them out and see what feels good.

I actually tried the odyssey two ball yesterday evening at american golf and really couldn't get on with it at all. I missed about three quarters of the attempted putts with it. I think because I am tall and putt with a fairly upright stance probably had an effect.

But thats cool if it works for you! :)

They certainly are! From my testing I think I am preferring/putting better with a heavier blade putter.

I've tried one place but they wouldn't let me take it out to the green as they didn't want it to get scuffed etc.

Sounds like your putting stroke is relatively sound but you just need a little help with alignment and keeping the face of the putter on the right path through your stroke.

Not sure which 2-Ball you've tried, but give the White Hot XG SRT one a go if you've not already. The perimeter weighting helps massively over the conventional 2-Balls. Other than that I reckon you might get some mileage out of the Marxman, #7 ('The Fang') or the Sabertooth in the White Hot XG range.

Same as what I thought initially. But I honestly preferred mine to the scottys I tried, even though the Yes! was half the price.

Aye, I hear what you say but to be honest i'm getting on better with heavier blades than mallets. I will try some more

Ok mate, I'll definitely take a look.

I'm actually hoping to go see a second hand Odyssey black series that a guy was selling near me. I actually got on with this putter the best out of all but its so expensive. Should hopefully get a good deal if its kosher.

I do however, need to be careful as there is a lot of dodgy Odyssey putters going around at the moment. I did have a good look at the 3 at american golf so hopefully won't get stuffed. I guess i'll see how it goes.

Is there any reason not to buy a decent 2nd hand putter?

Yes, the Taylor Made Rossa Monza is a bit of a beast:D
It certainly helps having the extra weight at the bottom, seems to pull your putting stroke through nicely.

Try and decide if you like a soft insert or a metal face. I like the harder feel and louder sound of a metal face, but some people like the soft, silent inserts like on most Odysseys.

No reason not to get a second hand putter. I would suggest trying it out first if possible rather than buying blind on eBay so you can get a feel for it.

Thanks mate, I too prefer a metal face, it seems more natural to me. Theres nothing bad about inserts but they take some getting used to.

Not played in a long time but my Ping putter hasn't failed me yet.

Thanks for your opinion mate, I too thought the Ping putters were good.

Has anyone tried the Nike unitized putters? They look well made, but are pretty difficult to get hold of round here.

Woe is me! Just played and went round in 7 over, but took 37 putts!! I've never counted putts before but all this putter chat made me want to. Although, it is encouraging that I could score so much better just by improving putting :)

On thursday i was 6 over through 16 and then went double and bogey, two consecutive 3-putts for me killed my round and i finished +9.

As one of my dad's m8's always says,

Drives for show
Putts for doe

I wish you got a doe for putting well!! I would call her bambie (I added the 'e' because she's female) and would ride her majestically round the golf course. :)

The phrase is 'Drive for show, putt for dough' (as in money) lol
