Afternoon,

So it seems like it's time to upgrade my graphics card (maybe the PC but I hope only the graphics card)

nearly 4 years ago I bought my PC from OCUK, it was the Ultima Extreme Envy V2" Intel Core i7 4770K @ 4.5GHz Overclocked Haswell Quad Core Gaming PC. This PC has a GeForce GTX 780 in it with 3gb of memory.

The PC has 16gb of 2133MHz RAM.

I have seen that I am starting to have to reel in the graphics settings in some new games.

If I chuck in a newer and considerably more powerful graphics card will I see a significant improvement? or will the rest of the PC be holding it back?

Full spec below...

Your PC is fine to chuck in any Gpu on the market atm. It's still a very relevant setup. To get a meaningful upgrade you would be looking at gtx1070 and above. AMD are releasing Vega in the next few months so it might be a good idea to wait and see what the market looks like after it's release. Nobody really knows how powerful it's going to be or it's pricing. If you don't want to wait then again it's gtx1070 or above.

I would stay away from the Founders edition. The gaming would be the card to get out of those 2 and would be a great upgrade for you. I think there are better coolers to get on the gtx1080 but hopefully some users can come and give you more feedback.

A Zotac AMP edition is a good cooler with a 5 year warranty as long as you register the card with them within a couple of weeks from purchase. The Zotac amp's well priced within the range of coolers for the card it's for, You don't need the amp extreme just the amp.

get a 1070 or 1080, there are some sweet deals to be had.

A second vote from me for the Zotac cards, they are absolutely awesome and 5 years warranty for those of us who like to keep their cards for a long time.

If you game at 1080p, I'd get a 1070, if you game at 1440p get a 1080, if you want a card that will serve you well for a long time, get a 1080. That's kinda it.

I had a 980ti, loved that card and sold it for a great price in anticipation for the 1080ti, used a 480X as a stop gap and to give the AMD team a test...they are great cards and excellent value that will last quite a few years into the future with 8 GB of memory, great Connectivity (DP1.4 / HDMI 2.0) and excellent DirectX12 as well as Vulcan capabilities...if I didn't have an expensive addiction to new tech, I would be very happy with the AMD 480/580 Series.

I agree with everyone else. I have the same CPU but at 4.7GHz and it is still going strong. Will likely keep it for another year or two until 7nm Ryzen comes out.

In your shoes I would either wait for Vega or just grap a cheap 1070 which will be a big upgrade over what you got. You will be saving £400 vs going to a 1080ti and you can put that money aside and get another upgrade to a 2070 which will likely run just as fast as a 1080ti but do so much more efficiently. Just like the 1070 does over a 980ti. But likely even more so as Volta will likely be a much bigger step up in architecture compared to the step up from maxwell to pascal. You can then sell the 1070 if you wanted also making the upgrade even cheaper.

Would definitely wait and see what Vega brings though at this point. Not long left now.

Also lots of low £200s 980ti's available, I'd look at that before anything else. As much as I like AMD, I'd have to say don't get your hopes up too much. Pricing-wise it will still be at Nvidia's level, and for performance likewise, maybe a bit better than Pascal. The only good reason to wait is if you have Freesync imo.

I love people who come in asking bout GPUs, hum and haw at the mid-range and talk of waiting then buy the best GPU on the market. Lol. Good on you mate. Get a big ass 4K monitor and get that 1080Ti enjoyed! I don't think Vega will leave you wanting over a 1080Ti.

Yeah, I know, those people are annoying :P

I figured that if I was going to try and get 3 years plus out of the next card, I may as well get as much card as possible.

In a few months I might not have the cash (wedding) so thought, sod it!
