Fair warning - if you hope to see a really compelling build or even ideal cable management you may be disappointed! But this is my first build in just short of 7 years (and I don't touch my PCs in between upgrades unless something breaks) so I thought it might be nice to record the build ... mostly for my own benefit. I understand that there probably isn't much exciting about plugging a standard 4070 into a budget motherboard (well actually i'm very excited about, I just know most of the builds on here are amazing and beyond my skills)

I am sure there are parts to this build many of you will disagree with, but this is the first system I have ever mapped out myself and I am happy with it. My old PC was put together while I was a student based on advice from MMO friends and has served me very well, but it is now struggling even outside of games and is occasionally making mildly alarming noises, so I thought that now I have a full time job (and a very forgiving wife) I would save up for a few months and put together a new system - I waited for Black Friday to try get the most out of my budget. I didn't get any crazy deals, but did make modest savings on pretty much everything but my CPU...every little helps and let me put a few quid towards 'optional' factors like RGB.

Everything except one part (a Corsair AIO which has been marked as 'dispatched' for over a week - but I still haven't even been given a tracking number  not from OC!) has arrived, so here is my 'table full of cardboard':

TINwbiS.jpeg

My final build was:

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Zotac GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super Solid 16GB
Corsair Vengeance RGB EXPO 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-48000C30 6000MHz Dual Channel Kit
Crucial P3 Plus SSD 1TB M.2 NVMe
Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD 2 TB
Corsair RM850e PSU
ASUS TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI
iCUE LINK H150i RGB AIO Liquid CPU Cooler - White (hopefully?)
Antec CX800 Elite RGB Mid Tower - White

My main theme was creatively called 'best I can do for a set budget across Black Friday' in the hope of futureproofing (I know that's a dirty word) at lower settings for as long as possible into the future. I knew I wanted to go AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU (only because my last 3 GPUs have been AMD and I just fancied a change) but aside from that I was prepared to be flexible across the build. I had some cashback and a few vouchers saved up which also helped with costs.

I had always planned to use my existing Cooler Master case which is dull but functional. But while speccing out this build I rather fell in love with fish tank cases and at the last moment I bought an Antec CX800 Elite RGB Mid Tower - White. At £65 quid its a lot cheaper than the fairly similar looking Corsair version which I adored. It comes with tempered glass and 6 RGB fans... i'm hoping it turns out to be both cheap and cheerful

I have never had an RGB computer but have always secretly wanted one - I had bought a couple of boxes of very very cheap (3 for £12!) Thermalright RGB fans and a Thermalright Phantom Spirit RGB CPU cooler to try and give my existing case (despite very little visibility) a hint of colour - but when I caved and bought the Antec case this already had 6 fans, so I sent these back and put the money towards covering most of the AIO cost (which was on a healthy discount). Maybe this was a bit of a pointless change, but I am a bit excited about the new case and AIO. Never had an AIO before, I have only ever used the stock cooler for my previous cpus.

As I now have a computer which should hopefully be capable of more than 1080p (or which at the very least will run Football Manager pretty damn well!) I figured I should probably replace my ancient monitor and picked up: MSI 27" MAG 274QRF QD E2 - which I am conveniently not counting within my budget as my wife is getting me it for Christmas :p It was on a very healthy discount and feedback on the forum has been I would struggle to do better for the price.

If I had known I would end up with a white fish tank case I might have tried to see if I could get deals on a white motherboard and GPU (I think Zotac have one) - but I bought the case at the very last second and wasn't going to start processing returns and looking for new parts at that stage.

I know I don't have the prettiest parts and certainly lack skill - but after years of watching LTT and looking at lovely builds online I really want to try my best to build it properly in terms of cable management etc to atleast make it look tidy - I am very open to advice and feedback

My CPU is a AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D! Yes its probably overkill for my GPU, but I upgrade my PC very rarely and I happened to be specing out my system on the day pre-orders went live (I didn't even know it was a thing until I started seeing all the YouTube reviews fill my timeline). It was about £35 more than the CPU I was planning to get and I just thought why not treat myself... especially if it means my rig is viable a bit longer into the future.

My case cost £65 rather than £165 so i'm sure it is going to have its downsides - but i'm really excited about it and think it looks stupendous. It comes with 6 RGB fans, which hopefully will look good and provide effective cooling. I understand they aren't ARGB and may be molex but im relaxed about this, I wasn't temped by the more expensive cases so it was this or nothing.

My Zotac 4070 TI Super Solid is a BIG BOY. Completely dwarfs my Vega 56 which is by far the biggest card I have ever owned. I checked (several times) and apparently it will fit in my case without issue.

I know its maybe a bit silly in a budget conscious build as the 7900 arguably gives better value, but my last 3 PCs have had AMD cards and I went into this build wanting to try team green for a change. I always expected to get a 4070 super, but saving a few quid on the motherboard and other parts let me stretch to the cheapest 4070 TI super (props to OC for having the best deal all black Friday). As I rarely upgrade my PC I am hoping that having the extra few GB of memory over the standard 4070 super will help get a bit more time out of my build

I did get RGB ram, hoping it looks great, but very possible my inner child cost me a few quid on this part - especially if it ends up hard to see beside the CPU cooler

There is very purposely no thrills my with motherboard. I had originally ordered a slightly better reviewed Auros board, but this TUF gaming B650 wifi came on sale for a very good price and as far as I can tell it does everything I need it to. I don't plan on running any heavy overclocks and don't need a million PCIe lanes so really not sure i'm missing out on much by buying literally the cheapest b-650 board on the market instead of an X870 board. I took the board out of the box to flash the BIOS and genuinely think its also a good looking board

I have never had an m.2 before, my current PC has a small sata SSD and a large hard drive which was left over from a previous build from over a decade ago. Now I have two! The Samsung 990 pro was probably the best discount I got across black friday. Maybe you don't really notice the difference compared to sata in real life, but im really excited to try it out.

PSU is just a standard Corsair 850w, I had a 650W I was hoping to reuse.. PC Part Picker suggested it would be fine with my build but Nvidia recommended 750w so I thought it was better to be safe than sorry.

Oh... and as I noticed it apparently appeared in a few of the above pictures this is a 'random £3 Christmas tree from Asda' sadly not RGB, but it does have RG?

Looking forward to starting the build, but figured I should probably install the top mounted AIO before the motherboard

I bought my AIO from the manufacturer, it's been marked as 'shipped' all week. But I just got an email from UPS saying they are expecting my delivery soon... and it's shipping from Europe. No build this weekend then. Maybe i should have just stuck with the air cooler, but I thought the white AIO would go really well with my shiny new case :p

I got most of my parts from OC UK including monitor, case, CPU, GPU, and RAM (plus a couple of bits from the famed evil mega corporation) and had no delivery problems at all despite black Friday pressures so I was really impressed with OCUK. Delivery to NI is a bit expensive or I probably would have got even more from OC, but that's not really their fault

Out of all the parts, im particularly pleased with my case at the moment, just think it looks smashing. Hopefully the RGB fans are decent... it was a bit ominously cheap for a pretty case and 6 fans!

Have you built the pc yet ?

Oops just re-read your post, no build this weekend.

I suppose i could build most of it (parts have been turning up since early November and I am very inpatient!) But I figured it would be sensible to install the top mounted AIO before the motherboard. But maybe it doesn't matter?

2 things to note as you have a 9800x3d on a b650 you may need to update the bios to get the CPU to work,This can be done with bios flashback button on your motherboard . Worth checking on how to do this.

It's definitely worth updating the bios even if it works straight out as new bios has the settings for the optimum settings for the 9800x3d.

On first boot AM5 build can take up to 15 mins to show anything on screen and may reboot a couple of times as the motherboard is training the memory, so be patient.

Yeah I thought my system was dead on first boot, just a blank screen. Would be good if BIOS outputting simple text saying "your PC isn't broke, memory in training please wait 20 minutes"

I flashed the bios last weekend. Never tried it before and it sounded scary, but it was actually very straightforward (there are helpful youtube videos) well... assuming I did it right

Really helpful tip about the 15 mins to boot, I had no idea and would have been very alarmed!

Does it literally show nothing, not even a vendor BIOS splash screen?! Yeah that would worry me... although being the person I am I'd probably 'rage quit' and walk away from it for 15+ minutes anyway

Nope, totally nothing. This is my first PC build for a while, last one was Xeon, first PC was IBM XT, all have posted/BIOS within a few seconds

Wow... I'd totally assume something was broken or that I'd buggered something up in assembly! I'd expect the training to take a while from what others have said on here, but for an average consumer they'd have no idea and if it was their first build, would probably be sat there thinking "**** I should have bought a pre-build"

yeah took a while I read the BIOS update log, apparently new firmware improved it.

Suppose if you just happen to make a brew or busy doing something else just during POST not a problem, but if you're sitting there looking at blank screen- and my stupid monitor goes into standby when it doesn't receive a signal.

My last part finally arrived

Never had an AIO before and there seems to be a wide range of similar looking Corsair products, but this one matched my case and was on a good discount so hopefully it does a good job (while looking pretty)

I'm personally a fan (no pun intended) of the Corsair AIO's, and I did see the white version on sale at very attractive prices.

I don't think you can go far wrong with that cooler and you can synchronise the LED colours with your RAM which I like.

I have an issue with the AIO and need to try to do something about the cable management. However very pleased to say that it lives! (Mostly)

The case is pretty, but very small and difficult to work in. However everything did fit and for £65 I remain very pleased! They connect via molex and aren't argb, but I think the 6 fans that came with the case look pretty great

Booted straight away and for Windows 11 installed. Apparently the windows 7 key I bought as a teenager still works on Windows 11

The AIO fans and RGB aren't working. But the RGB in the header attached to the CPU seems to be on and BIOS suggests 'CPU' fan is doing something... Hopefully I've just plugged something in wrong (though if it's at the bottom of the motherboard I might cry)

I heard the pump working so maybe I've forgotten to do something with the fans wiring or something.

I wasn't sure what the RGB ram would look like, bought it on a bit of a whim but think it looks great

I'm too tired to try sort fixing the AIO or cables tonight, but pretty chuffed with my system assuming I get it working.

My previous case was a boring but very effective cooler master master case. It had acres of space around the motherboard.... This really doesn't especially with fans under the GPU. The case is dwarfed by my old one, but I adore it and there does seem to be good airflow in the case

I have some proper pictures of the build il post when (if) I get it properly working. Hopefully it's as simple as I've missed an extra fan cable somewhere

Have you got it hooked up to the iCue link hub? (I think it's included with the cooler, can't remember where (probably an LTT vid) where they said it wasn't included but is required for it to work!)

It does come with the hub, and there are multiple cables running from the AIO, PSU and motherboard to the hub... It's more complicated than I expected

while the fans came pre-assembled onto the radiator and hoses (which was a bit unexpected) I am wondering if I was supposed to run some sort of cable from the fans to the main AIO structure they are already attached to. Il check it out after work tomorrow
