Looking for some assistance.

I am well overdue an upgrade but really don't know what to go for. I have always stuck with intel but obviously Ryzen is a bit of a game changer. I have around £400 to spend. This is my current spec:
Asus b85-plus motherboard
Intel i5 4570
Corsair h100i
Strix gtx 970
16gb kingston 1333mhz (i know )
650w corsair psu (not sure what exact model)

Any and all thoughts welcome ☺️ tia

If it's a gaming pc you would get the biggest performance gain by upgrading the graphics card. If you wish to upgrade the cpu/motherboard/memory I would wait a few months because the new AMD Ryzen cpu's and motherboards are coming out around the middle of the year and if they are as good as the hype surrounding them suggests, will be worth waiting for. There are plenty who say upgrade now to a current Ryzen 2600 and B450/X470 motherboard and then sell the 2600 when the new cpu's launch and swap it for one of them. That would be the last thing that I would do. For one thing you have the hassle of removing the cooler and changing cpu's and for another you will lose a large chunk of cash selling any current cpu when the new ones launch. If changing the gpu isn't enough I would bide my time with what you have until the new cpu's and boards launch. There are plenty of people on here who are running older pc's that you are.

as one of the comments, vega 56 being used might be a reference card. key is to keep volts low with vega. new amd software allows the card to undervolt its self . less heat, more power!

though your not running K version of intel

You could take advantage of the current deal on the Vega 56

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £309.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

This would give you a good boost in GPU power.

You would probably want to upgrade to faster RAM as well.

You've not mentioned storage - if you don't have an SSD (I'm assuming you do) there are some good deals on them currently.

Thanks dude my main reason for upgrading is for ddr4. Do you not think the cpu and ram I have now will bottleneck that gpu? Excuse my ignorance but are amd gpu drivers better now? The last ati card I had was an x1950 pro. Oh and yes I already have an ssd

Thanks for the reply. I had no idea they were releasing new chips any time soon. Any idea where I can read about them?

For 1080p your setup seems capable. Have you struggled in any games recently ? Also AMD drivers are better now. I have been running a R9 290 for a fair amount of time with no issues in gaming.

Might be a bottleneck. But if you if u upgrade cpu/ram then you’ll probably get a bottleneck the other way.

I’ve had a r9 390 gpu for 3/4 years and never experienced any driver issues.

We have a big thread on them in the cpu section but to be honest I would avoid it as it's largely been ruined by petty bickering and flaming over Intel vs AMD. You would be best to google Zen 2/Ryzen 3000 to get some info although a lot of it is speculation and hype at the moment. AMD revealed some details at CES last month and that's about all we have to go on for now.

Thanks man, I might go for a gpu upgrade now then do the rest later. I am 100% going amd . I have always stuck with intel but the value for money AMD offer is hard to look past ☺️

I suggest waiting for Ryzen 3000 to get released, that will have huge benefits for gaming and everyday tasks
